On Monday, DH and I welcomed our daughter Maisie into the world. She arrived on her due date and is a leap day baby! Labour was the opposite of what I expected and planned in my head! My birth plan was to labour at home til ready to go to birth centre then use the pool. Well, Maisie had other ideas!
DH and I went to the supermarket and on the way out of the shop, my waters broke! Then contractions started almost immediately, 2 mins apart. When we got home we saw that waters had meconium in them so we went straight to hospital - no birth centre or pool allowed now. When I was examined, I was already 4cm dilated! But baby's head was -2 ,so high still. My contractions were thick and fast so I got gas and air to puff on. I got the urge to push very quickly and midwife examined me again and I was 10cm! The whole labour lasted 3hrs50mins from waters breaking to birth! Not what I thought a first labour would be! It was incredibly intense with no breaks between contractions so I was exhausted at the end but managed with only gas and air so I was happy. She weighed 8lb 3oz.
At the end they had to give me an episiotomy to get the head out and baby came out with her arm up by her head, so I ended up with a third degree tear - ended up in surgery with a spinal block, but baby and daddy got to come with me and I got skin to skin and first feed whilst being stitched up!
Should be going home today. I'm finding the recovery from the tear quite hard and not looking forward to sitting in a car later today!
Good luck to all the mums waiting for the little ones x
