Rice cereal instead of oatmeal?

Did anyone have bad luck with oatmeal cereal but good luck with rice cereal? I've tried giving LO oatmeal cereal and it gives him horrible gas, so I'm debating if I should switch to rice instead (planning to wait at least another few weeks or so to do any other "solids") or if it would be best to skip cereal altogether. I decided on oatmeal because he is EBF and I've heard rice cereal can be hard on the gut of EBF babies. Thoughts? Experiences?

Personally I would just skip the cereal.  I started out giving LO oatmeal cereal and I thought we were doing good because he'd let me put it in his mouth, but when I made him a pear puree and he loved it SO much I felt that I should've just skipped the cereal and started him on fruits and veggies instead.  Good luck though if you try switching to rice.  :)

LO is EBF too, by the way.
  • Loading the player...
  • Rice is working fine for mine, and he's otherwise ebf.  We just do a little each morning...it's  more for practice eating from a spoon and swallowing slightly more solid things, and for additional exposure,  not for nourishment. We've  also done pureed  sweet potatoes,  peas, and banana,  but he seems more comfortable with the taste of the rice cereal right now.
  • We're in the same boat. EBF and gassy/ fussy with oatmeal. She poops so infrequently, I don't want to do rice only because it will bind her up even more. We have our 6month apt tomorrow so I want to talk to the pedi but I'm thinking of skipping to veggies.
  • Don't have an answer for your question but we use a Multigrain cereal instead of rice and oatmeal
  • Rice is actually supposed to be gentler on the belly. I gather the information from my pediatrician as well as my vet lol... We gave boiled rice and chicken to our puppy when he had a belly bug... I also believe it's recommended for people tummy bugs also because it is bland and gentle.
  • Just skip it

Same here! I was so excited LO seemed to do so well with the oatmeal and the spoon. I gave her a butternut squash puree a week later and she was head diving into the spoon.
She loved it! I hope it works out either way for you. My LO is also EBF. She has a dairy allergy so my diet is restricted, but every new food we give her has gone so smooth.
  • My little gal hated rice cereal so we switched to oatmeal. She loves it!
