Infertility

IVF ladies, how are you billed?

If IUI#3 fails I will be moving to IVF and have already made a consultation at my clinic..Anyone that is starting to inquire on the ivf process or go through the process have insurance coverage? So i have 80% coverage but the clinic im at now asks for a $12k deposit upfront to hold the procedure date and currently is in June earliest. Then after fees and procedure i submit for reimbursement from my insurance. I had no idea and assumed the clinic billed the insurance directly! Ugh! Anyone else hear the same? Going to be researching other clinics if this is not the norm

Re: IVF ladies, how are you billed?

  • Hello.  My clinic also requires full payment up front.  $10,000 just to secure a spot.  Apparently there a waiting list...

  • My insurance covers 50%. My clinic submitted the paperwork to my insurance for approval and once that was done I had to pay my portion (approx $3800) before I started BCPs and then meds had to be done thru my insurance providers pharmacy. My insurance also has an agreement with my clinic and gets a reduced rate therefore my portion is reduced as well.
  • I have no fertility coverage. It was 21K on my day 3 base line. Plus meds which have now been close to 7K.
these numbers include icsi and PGS.
i ended up with one healthy embryo from this cycle.
  • I don't have any coverage either and they require payment as soon as you start your baseline. @alexiskiriluk  we also have one healthy embryo this cycle. Have you transferred yet?
  • @Joyzie77 we have not transferred. March 16th. Have you? Did you do PGS? FX for our one and only embies!!

We paid on day 3 baseline too.  $14k for everything through ER (including ICSI but with an additional $2k directly to the company for PGD).  Meds have been approx. $3k so far but I expect to have to order more.  FET will be another $3-4k.

  • My RE/clinic submitted the paperwork for approval and we just got the call today that insurance will cover everything (ivf, icsi, pgd, fet, and meds). I know the PGD lab requires payment first, but haven't been told yet if we have to pay up front and then file for reimbursement, or not, but hopefully we will be finding out soon...aiming for an April/May IVF/FET cycles.
  • We had to pay 4 separate parties - we paid my RE portion at baseline, paid for the retrieval and transfer procedures at the surgery center (don't remember when - 7 days before ER I think), paid for anesthesiologist at egg retrieval procedure, and paid the pharmacy for meds.

    No insurance coverage here either.
  • Thank you all for your insight and information! We will just have to save a bit more to have it all up front and make the deposit so the procedure will most likely be much later this year than we planned originally since my clinic that im comfortable with is booked months out.

  • Can your IVF clinic recommend a company to help finance it?  If you borrow the money, and then pay it back once insurance covers you, you won't end up paying too much in interest.

  • I had to pay everything up front.  That meant I had to get a loan!  If I waited to save it up, my eggs would all dry up.

(I also of course  made a wise financial decision based on what I can afford, and will pay off a chunk of the loan with the tax refund I get after claiming all my medical expenses, and I'm generally anti-debt, but it made sense for this.)

  • @Starlight811 We shopped around for a loan, ended up going with a credit union. They got us a better rate than even a fertility finance company. Best of luck!
