  We traveled at 3 months and brought the travel system with car seat base. I wouldn't rent a car seat, you'd hope they're not reusing one that's been in an accident but who knows. We carried LO on the plane, left the travel system as we boarded so it was put underneath last and then was waiting for us when we deplaned.
  
  I believe you can use most car seats without the base, I just didn't have time to look it up and I was traveling with my family so I knew I'd have enough people to carry the base around. 
  
  There was no problem traveling with the whole system but TSA took freaking forever to clear it through the X-ray machine, they had to swab all the parts and apparently the guy who was solely responsible for that was on break. So just make sure you give yourself plenty of time for security screening cause it takes a little longer.

  I flew by myself with Bubs at 6 months. Did you buy a seat for you LO? It honestly made all the difference for me...I still held him most of the time, but after a while he was totally over being held and just wanted to sit in his seat.
  
  I brought our travel system with us, checked the stroller at the gate, and brought the car seat on the plane for him to ride in. If you're carrying LO, I wouldn't check the car seat with your baggage...bring the whole system with you and gate check it (confirm that they can gate check it ahead of time), and bring a bag for the car seat to keep it from getting crud all over it.
  
  We did not bring the base because our car seat can be secured without it...you'll have to check your specific one to be sure. Most of them can be. Definitely try it out before you go so you know what you're doing! If you have a seat for LO, check to see if you can bring the base on the plane. I called our airline ahead of time and they actually recommended that the base NOT be used because the bases tended to be wider than the plane seats, or something to that effect, and it became challenging to get the seat secured with the base and the lap belt extender.
  
  I would not rent a car seat since you have no idea if it's actually safe or not.
  
  Like PP said, make sure you leave a lot of time for security. Also, if you have a carrier, wear LO through security...if they're in a soft-sided carrier you don't have to take them out to go through the x-ray. I wore Bubs and pushed the stroller with my carry on sitting in it up until it was time to get on the plane...then I moved him to his car seat.
  
  Also, if you're able to pick your seat, I think it helped to sit in the back of the plane. We were the last to deboard, but that was fine because I had plenty of time to get everything back in order, and it made it a really painless process. When you board, ask the flight attendant while bathroom has a changing table in it (sometimes only one of them does).

  Thank you so much for the advice. We did not get a seat for LO. It will be both me and DH, so I'm hoping between the two of us we will be able to entertain him. After talking to one of my girlfriends who we are visiting on our trip, she is going to pick us up at the airport and let us borrow his car seat that her 2 year old has outgrown. So, we aren't even bringing the car seat any more, thank goodness!  We are trying to decide on whether or not to purchase an umbrella stroller just for the airport because my friend is also letting us use her Bob stroller while we are there. I'm just hoping we can entertain LO enough during the 4hr flight, or that he sleeps. He's crawling and pulling himself up now and is not a fan of sitting still, so I'm a little worried.

  I carried my baby in an Ergo through the airport. Wore him right through security. It worked out great.

  We fly with our 7 month old tomorrow!  Was happy to read this thread.  We are only traveling about an hour, but who knows how it will go!

  @ChelcLynn123@jerseygirl227Good luck! I traveled with my baby in December and we took my solly baby wrap and stroller and baby car seat. We didn't give the stroller and baby car seat until we got to the gate. I didn't buy a seat because he doesn't even like to be in his car seat so much. We flew from Maryland to Orlando, so it was only 2:30 hours. The funny thing is I fed him while we were waiting to take off and he fell asleep but as soon we were in the air he woke up and was awake the entire flight lol same thing when we were leaving orlando. I took everything in his diaper bag from diapers, wipes, teethers, and every toy I could fit. I think if you're prepared and your diaper bag has everything you need them you will be fine. Also no one in the plane was rude or mean and my son behaved very good! When he got tired of staring outside, he would go with my dad or my mom and stand on our legs or play with his toys. We just got to be patient and embrace this new adventure, it worked for me and I tried to make it the most amazing first flight for my family but most importantly for my son and I!   We had a successful flight!  She cried a bit during the descent once, but was great other than that.
