Ultrasound and All that Water

I'm having a 32 week growth scan tomorrow.

Oddly enough, at my 20 week scan they did not require me to drink a bunch of water.

THIS time they're asking me to drink 48 oz. before coming in. Baby Gal is sitting, most days, on what feels like DIRECTLY on my bladder and even standing up or moving is enough to make me lose it. I am legit terrified I'm going to not make it to the hospital with a bladder full of six 8 oz glasses of water.

I'm a rule follower and I want to make it easy for them to do their jobs....but anyone "fudge" it a bit and maybe only drink a FEW full glasses of water and it turned out okay???

Birth doesn't scare me. Peeing myself at the doctors office does. LOL

Re: Ultrasound and All that Water

  • Do they need you to actually not pee, or do they just need you to be hydrated? Sometimes, if you get dehydrated, it can cause a drop in amniotic fluid. My doctor makes everyone pee before they do any type of US, as far as I've heard. I'd check to make sure that they need you to drink 48 oz without a bathroom break before I actually do that. I'm pretty sure I can't do that NOT pregnant, so I have no idea how someone at 32 weeks would be able to lol

  • That's a really good question! I don't know....I call them and find out.

That sounds very strange. I would also call and clarify. I had a growth scan last Thursday (~33 weeks) and there was no mention of needing to drink water or not pee. As with PP, my OB office has you pee before every appointment, including ultrasounds.

  • They can usually still see everything just fine. It depends on the equipment and the technician, some are adamant and will make you go drink more water and wait outside until it is sitting firmly in your bladder. Before my 2016 insurance kicked in, I was going to a medical school for free ultrasounds. There, they always had me drink a TON of water beforehand and it needed to be fully digested before they would proceed.

Since I've been going to actual diagnostic centers though, the equipment and/or technicians are much better with just dealing with whatever I've got. One even told me "omigod, your bladder is so full you poor thing!" And she let me get up and go pee after taking a few measurements, to continue the rest of the ultrasound comfortably.

No they need a big full bladder. It gives them a "window" somehow, to look at baby.
  • Good luck! That's aweful! Just try not to sneeze or cough or you know...breathe deep.
  • The probably want you to have a full bladder during the scan. Not, 'don't pee at all after drinking 48 oz of water'. 48oz isn't really that much though, just 6 cups. Unless it's an early appt, then it would be hard to get all that down in a short time period.

Omg I had to have a late scan to check placenta previa with DD and also had to drink a ton. It was seriously aweful and a true miracle I didn't pee my pants. The smallest cough or sneeze and it would have all come out. But I don't think it was quite that much...

  • Never heard about peeing or not peeing being related to ultrasounds and i have had a ton ultrasounds this pregnancy
