Car seat on a charter bus??

Our tiny little high school just made it to the state basketball tournament for the first time in school history, and the school is chartering a 'fan bus' for the roughly 3hr trip. I would really like to take advantage of the bus instead of driving, but is it safe to take DS? The bus likely won't have seatbelts or lower latches, but should I bring him in his infant seat anyway? Should I wear him in carrier? I know the law states he doesn't have to be in a car seat, but I feel so weird about riding with him unrestrained. Anyone have experience with this??

Re: Car seat on a charter bus??

  • I take my baby on public transit all the time and usually go with a carrier. I wouldn't feel safe for three hours though.

  • I would use the infant seat and just place it on the seat. I've used my carrier for short trips in town, but I wouldn't on the highway because I'm paranoid.

  • I take baby on public transit (buses and BART) in an Ergo, but my longest trip was probably 45 minutes.
  • Does the charter bus have full seat belts? Some infant seats allow you to install using a seatbelt. We've used that method for taking LO in other people's cars. That may be another option

No, you do not use a car seat on a bus if it doesn't have a seatbelt. Buses are safer than cars and designed to compartmentalize in an accident. Some buses don't even permit you to bring a seat on board. I encourage you to join car seats for the littles Facebook page and ask your question for a full explanation and to get all your questions answered. The group is staffed by CPSTs and is all based on proper use and facts.
