Infertility

Has anyone else taken Levothyroxine during IVF?

I feel completely lost at this point. I'm still trying to get the hang of all the lingo, and at least a basic grasp of IVF itself so I apologize if this question just comes across as completely ridiculous, I have about 20 more questions truth be told but I'll start with this one.

I recently had my blood work come back and my TSH was 5.602. I was immediately given a prescription for Levothyroxine and told I'd be on it for the next 6 months and then we would test again. There is no delay from previously set dates, down regulation beginning on the 21st of March.

I figured it must not be a really big deal but when I started reading everything online about side effects and canceled appointments...... So before I get the better of myself I thought maybe some other women may have been there before and would be willing to share their experience.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Has anyone else taken Levothyroxine during IVF?

  • When I first started our infertility journey, the first thing they did was test my TSH, my level was 5. They wouldn't pursue anything until my level was within normal range (normal range for fertility purposes). RE put me on Levothyroxine for a month and repeated my level. It went down some, but they increased my dosage to 50mg/day. And repeated again to make sure the dosage was good for me. Their reasoning was that it may be more difficult to get pregnant, and if you do, your at higher risk of miscarrying if your TSH is over 2. I've been on the medicine routinely for almost 2 years and my level is currently 1.7. Every clinic practices medicine differently though! I'm sure if they were concerned they would push back until your level came down.

  • Thanks for the reassurance that they would have pushed back the date if they that it could cause an issue. Part of me worries that the doctors only concern is profit. I don't feel that way when I am at the office, but its one of those thoughts that creeps into the back of my mind.

I am already on 75mg, so I hope they don't feel the need to put it any higher. I also have a family history of hypothyroidism but I very foolishly thought that if I had an issue my thyroid it would cause me to gain weight, and seeing as I'm not overweight I figured I had no problem. Not my smartest moment.
