Unable to determine sex of baby

I apologize if there has been a discussion on this already, but I did a search and couldn't find anything.

We had our 20 week ultrasound on Friday and we wanted to know if we were having a boy or girl. Unfortunately they couldn't get the baby in an ideal position, however the tech said she got a few quick glimpses and she said she thinks its a girl. She said she may be able to determine better at another ultrasound. Unfortunately my doctor will not be sending me for another ultrasound until 32-34 weeks! This makes things a bit difficult for me as I was hoping to get a more confident answer so that I could start planning the nursery, names, clothes etc.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Re: Unable to determine sex of baby

  • I haven't experienced this but do you have a local place like Tiny Toes where you can pay for an elective ultrasound?

  • Do you have the ability to have an outside elective ultrasound to determine the sex? Otherwise I would ask your doctor what she suggests. If you directly put her on the spot you may get a better response.
  • We were able to find out but our ultrasound tech did say if she couldn't we could come back in a month to try again, which would have felt like forever. I agree with looking for an outside ultrasound place as pp mentioned
  • This happened at our A/S as well. We ended up looking for elective ultrasound places and found one by us that had a $50 dollar package. I am happy we went with finding out sooner rather than later.
  • This happened to me today at my scan. My kiddo was head down, showing the spine, legs crossed with the cord between it's legs. After an hour and 15 minutes the tech finally said 90% girl. She couldn't measure the heart due to the position so I think I will have another ultrasound in a few weeks and hopefully we will be able to confirm. The nearest elective ultrasound is about 25-30 minutes away.
  • Ask to get one during your GD test. You should be getting that in 4-8 weeks. Unfortunately if they were able to see all the other anatomy in the scan, it wouldn't be 100% necessary and you will have to probably pay, though.
  • With my son, they scheduled the Anatomy Scan at 18 1/2 weeks. They could not tell for sure with him because the cord was between his legs. My doctor made up a reason to do an ultrasound 2 weeks later. It was very brief, but it was long enough to see the male anatomy real clearly!
  • This happened to me in my first pregnancy - they thought baby was a girl but weren't sure. My Dr. ended up sending me for another scan after A/S since baby was measuring a little behind. At that scan they were able to determine she was a girl.

  • I would just talk to your OB before you pay for an elective. My insurance covers a certain percentage of two: the dating ultrasound in the beginning, and then the anatomy scan. With DD, I ended up having five ultrasounds, just because my OB wanted to check on a few random things, and the other three were free of charge.

  • With our first they told us they were 80% sure it was a girl but couldn't get a good look. We painted the bedroom a neutral colour just in case but it was a girl
  • Have you done the panorama screening? Or do you plan to? They can tell you the sex. Or get your OB to make up a reason for another u/s.

I had GD last time and had 5 ultrasounds and payed about $300 each time. Boooo. So definitely check, OP!
