How to tell SO you're pregnant

Hi everyone, I'm curious to know some of the creative ways you all told your SOs that you are pregnant. We have a dog and no children yet (possibly use our dog?). I want to surprise my DH and record his reaction somehow without running the intimacy of the exciting news!
Stage IV endometriosis - 2 laparoscopic procedures 2016
Hashimoto's Hypothyroidism
Failed IVF round in 2016 - 6 mature eggs, 0 normal embryos on PGS testing
2nd round IVF started Jan 2017 ER - 11 mature eggs, 11 fertilized, ONE normal embryo

Re: How to tell SO you're pregnant

  • This is my second pregnancy and each time I said I was gonna do something fun and creative, but ended up just telling him. We were trying, and he knew I was temping/charting/etc and would ask what day I was testing, so no huge surprise.

  • This is our second together,( I have 2 from a previous marriage). Our son is 14 months old, so I made him a onesie. I designed it on my computer & printed it on iron on paper, it said,"This little monkey is going to be a big brother."  I put his pajama's on over it & later ask my husband so change him. He was quite surprised.
You can order different things online but, I didn't want to wait.  Maybe you could make a shirt, or a badge you could pin on the collar.

  • I put the digital HPT in a box and told him I had an early valentines present for him. It was kinda of anti climactic but cute.

  • I gave him a Valentine's Day card from the baby- he thought it was from the dog... It took him a good 90 seconds of rereading out loud and then he asked "are you knocked up?" Then he freaked out as was over the moon happy.
  • I always want to do something cute but end up blurting  it out as soon as I find  out. I get so excited  I just can't help myself and my husband  shows no emotional  reactions,.
  • I'm taking a class to finish one of my endorsements.. I created a slideshow and told him it was for extra credit and asked if he would watch it and tell me what he thought before I submitted it. It had pics of us and our son. I used the poem off pinterest.. I was just 1 before I met you..then quickly we became 2...etc. then at the end it said we wanted one more  ( he still didn't get it!) It said our "we" is soon to be 4. Then the positive test came up. Then he looked at me and said "wait, so this isn't for school?" Haha
  • I just said "I have something for you" and handed him the positive test. He squinted at it and asked, "Is that a line?" (it was NOT a squinter). I said, "Yes." He said "I told you I'd get you." and then he went back to his video game.

Really, though, we experienced a loss last time, so we know that a positive pregnancy test does not mean we're getting a baby. So I understand the lack of excitement. Plus he gets really scared of responsibility. My recommendation would be to try to determine where your husband will be coming from. If he will be thrilled, cute surprises might be nice. If he's going to need some time to process the news, you may be disappointed with a big reveal.

  • I just left my pee stick on the bathroom counter and waited for him to find it. Took hours! In the end I had to tell him to go in there and look for it. He was happy. It just wasn't how I pictured it going down.
  • Eh, I always told my husband as soon as I found out. For one, I was too impatient and excited, and for two I feel like he deserved to find out right away. If the shoe were on the other foot I'd be upset that he held out on me!

This is what I was thinking as well. I couldn't imagine keeping something a secret that wasn't entirely mine to keep. The baby is just as much his as it is mine, and I would be extremely hurt if that type of secret was kept from me for an extended period of time.

I agree! A day or two if you're doing a cute surprise  but  no more! I know one girl that held out 2 weeks on her dh. I knew before he did. Smh.
  • I made a picture slide show video using an app called VivaVideo.  The last picture at the end of the video was a picture of my pregnancy test. That night we went out for date night and I told him I made a video for him and he saw it. It was kind of cheesy and really hard to keep it a secrete for a whole day.

  • When we started trying I would wait to pee on a stick until he was home, then put the pregnancy test back in the wrapper after peeing on it so that the display window was covered and the handle was sticking out so that he could check it first. Made it more exciting for both of us.

  • I just told him that i had to tell him something, and he said..."You're pregnant!"

The last 2 were via text message immediately after peeing on a stick!
  • I'm with @SuperNerd42, @WinchestertoPittsburgh and @alysie89I felt like it was something we should do together. So I peed on a stick and showed it to him right away.

Same here. We've had losses (and we get pregnant really easily) so positive tests are exciting but not really....if that makes sense.

We were on a medicated/monitored cycle so hubby knew exactly what was going on. I had actually texted him and asked him to pick up some FRERs on the way home from work (which is a big favor to ask cause he bounces at a bar so he doesn't get off till 2am on Friday nights). But I couldn't wait so I took a Wondofo even though I was only 10 DPO and swore I'd wait a little longer. Popped right up. So when he came home with the tests, I handed him the Wondofo. He smiled and said "So why'd I have to go to the store at 3am??" Lol

  • My husband and I don't do anything for Valentines day. That day I randomly decided to take a test, it came back positive. I first tried to call him, of course he was really busy with calls and never called back. So the next morning when he came home I told him I had a V-day present for him, I put the test in a red gift bag, he was so confused because we don't do V-day. I think he was worried because he didn't get me anything   When he opened it he went "seriously" with a huge smile! He was so excited!
  • My first 2 I just called him at work and told him - with the first one he ran home from work for the rest of the day! (How cute!)

This time was certainly the least exciting, as I am a surrogate and it isn't our baby. I tested 5 days after transfer with FMU, which was REALLY early in the morning (before 6am). When it came up positive, I nudged him in his sleep, said "I'm pregnant" and he said "awesome" and went right back to sleep. No fanfare this time!
  • H is a huge Ravens fan, so I bought him a Ravens onesie and wrote a card from the baby- hi daddy, I know the Ravens sucked this year, but hopefully they will win this year when I wear this to cheer them on. It was hard to hold it in all day, but he actually ended up being busy at work all day and never texted me, so I kept the secret til after work.
  • @ashleyp625 We're Ravens fans too! DH is already scoping out Ravens baby gear. Lol

  • I put DS in a shirt that said "best big bro" and gave DH an early Valentine's day card that had some sappy text about how excited I was for the next 'chapter of our story,' and wrote "I hope you have room in your heart for one more Valentine". He thought I was joking! It was pretty adorable.

i actually tested at work because i had the tests delivered to my office from amazon. I honestly wasn't expecting it to be positive but i couldn't wait until i got home to find out. I didn't want to text H the news, so after work i bought a stuffed rabbit and a set of FSU onesies (we're both alumni) and set them up with the positive test on the kitchen table for him to see when he walked in the door after work. He was shocked and excited and dropped his phone haha! It was very cute.

If you want to incorporate the dog, we told both of our parents by sending the dog into their house with a bandana on that read "Future Big Brother". That got some great responses too and it was fun to let our furbaby participate in it!
