Migraine releif

I used to get migraine headaches all the time, but once I stopped HBC, they magically died down. This weekend I got my first one in what feels like forever, and I'm not allowed to take my meds.
So this is what I tried, and it seems to be helping:
Lavender oil on my temples and wrists
Peppermint oil on the offending areas (around my eye, behind my ear, base of skull)
A lacrosse ball - I lie on the floor on my back and put the ball under my neck on the bad side. It seems to release the tight muscle there.
I've also been taking benadryl at night to get some good sleep in.

Any other tips or tricks you guys have tried? These help, but certainly aren't a cure.

Re: Migraine releif

  • I also used to get a lot of headaches and migraines, and while I have a genetic predisposition to them, I think the majority are a result of a couple of head injuries. So take my suggestions with a grain of salt. I weaned myself off of prophylactic measures and excedrin a couple of months ago, and I also found that off of BC the headaches and migraines didn't happen as often and weren't as severe.

I find that when a migraine is setting in, my hands and feet get really cold so I do my best to keep them warm and it tends to help some (extra socks, hot shower, just straight up sitting on my hands).

I'm not a coffee drinker, but caffeine helps me too. Usually a can of coke for the mix of caffeine and extra sugar.

Deep tissue massage. It's a fucking lifesaver for me. I basically have the most lovely woman on the planet just massacre (it's a REALLY unpleasant experience) my neck for an hour, and I find that my headaches are basically gone for two weeks. It's obviously not a good immediate solution, but maintenance wise, it really helps me. If it's something that's a viable option for you, acupuncture and chiropractic adjustments are also good maintenance possibilities.

Other than that, ice packs, darkness, and a power nap when it's possible. I've been holding off on taking benedryl, but only because I've been waiting for a truly terrible attack to take it so it feels that much more glorious.

  • I'm not sure where to find it (any store local to you that has an 'as seen on TV' aisle)... But my last pregnancy, the 'Head On' roller actually worked. I know it seems like a crock, but the menthol in the cream really helped ease my headaches.

  • My doctor recommended drinking some caffeine to open up the blood vessels when a migraine strikes during pregnancy.

I completely cut out caffeine before becoming pregnant. I tried this on a migraine I got before becoming pregnant (anything with less than 200mg of caffeine is okay), and my headache went away pretty quickly!! I also turned out the lights and laid down for a bit. But I was really surprised the caffeine worked so quickly!! I used to take a prescription to get rid of migraines, and that seemed to be the only thing that would work...until now. :)

  • Thanks ladies! I found a remedy on Pintrest that involved soaking your fert in hot water and putting an ice pack on your neck. That seemed to help a bit. Ultimately, I would up using the ice packs and taking another nap. It's still there, but it seems to be on the way out.

I am actually using something similar. It's peppermint oil in a Shea Butter base. It gives that cooling effect. It helps!
  • I used to get really bad headaches when I was pregnant with my son in my second trimester. The only thing that helped was acupuncture. I went every two weeks to keep them at bay.
