Re: March / April - IVF/FET

  • Thanks @Rachnan.  A no interest for 18 month credit card would also be the best way to go if we can't get a loan, so I appreciate the tip!  Can I ask which company you went with for the card?  Good luck to you as well in your IVF cycle...sounds like it's the best choice for both of us!

Welcome to the board @Tusername!  I think we're in similar shoes in terms of getting ready for IVF after multiple IUI fails.  I hope you can join us on here and all goes well with your March 7th appointment.  We're considering doing PGS testing, so if so, we won't do the transfer until later on, like yourself.  Good luck to you!

  • I am doing pgs. We are doing gender selection since we found out I gave my son a x linked mutation and the whole autism risk thing. I might actually switch labs for this since the re lab is only 95% accurate. I feel like if I am paying so much for something important then we want it to be more accurate. My one embryo also stopped developing normally and we want higher chance of pregnancy.

  • Hello everyone! I wanted to introduce myself. DH and I have been trying for almost two years. We have an 11 year old from a previous relationship. A here is our story: HSG determined both tubes were blocked and we had surgery to unblock my tubes and then two unsuccessful iui's. Then in November we conceived on our own but turned out to be an ectopic pregnancy. I did not have to have surgery but did do a shot of MTX. I have done a month of Bcp already and will do 9 more days staring on March 1st. We are starting stims on March 13 and are doing an antagonist protocol. Tentative dates for ER and ET are March 24 and 29. I recently decided to add acupuncture as wel and have my first appointment on Tuesday. I've been reading posts here for a few days now and am happy to join the group! Has anyone else done acupuncture? What are your thoughts? Wishing everyone much success!

I suppose this is where I fit in...

I had cancer in 2013 and froze some embryos just before starting chemo.  Got the all clear from my oncologist to try to have our first/only baby back in September 2015, and have been working that direction ever since.

We decided to to PGS and PGD for our embryos--looking for the BRCA mutation that caused my cancer, so we won't pass that along.  Unfortunately, of the 8 embryos we started out with, 6 did not survive to grow to blast stage; of those that survived--one is male but has a chromosome problem (not compatible with life), and one is female with my BRCA mutation.

So.....we are shelling out the $$$ and going for one more attempt at egg retrieval to make more embryos.  I start checking an ovulation prediction kit on Monday, then will start a few weeks of Estrace, then Clomid, then Menopur and Follistim, then Ganirelix.  We are doing a very aggressive approach to this egg retrieval, because the odds are not with us.  The chemo aged my ovaries a lot--my  AMH/FSH levels are normal for a 50 year old woman.  I am 38.  If all goes to plan, we will do the retrieval around April 1st.  We will send samples of any successful embryos to Genesis Genetics for chromosome and BRCA testing, then go forward with a transfer sometime in May.

Me: Age 38  Husband: Age 39
    Chemo killed my ovaries
Currently:1 female embryo frozen at blastocyte stage, graded 6AA with a BRCA1 mutation
    4/16 ER cancelled on CD7: 1 follicle on L/ 0 follicles on R
    Now planning FET 7/6/16
Also starting ER in June (my sister is donating eggs), and will try for a boy/second pregnancy
  • Welcome to everyone who's joining this cycle!

@Knottie1456036854 good luck your your cycle. Losing all those embryos is so heartbreaking. My thoughts will be with you as you do your next retrieval. Hang in there girl!

  • @jenn6782 Haven't noticed any super noticeable symptoms. If anything, the past 2 days I've experienced very mild on/off abdominal cramping, but unsure if it is Lupron induced or what. Yes, our first transfer will be fresh and we will freeze the rest in case our 1st transfer is unsuccessful.

@kyethra I totally understand wanting to do gender selection especially with the information you have.  Me and MH thought of doing the same.  But we joined a clinical trial that is a blind study so we're rolling the dice on gender for our first.  Definitely go with your gut on switching labs if you think you should.  I switched REs when I felt like the first one wasn't aggressive enough for my liking and the RE himself was much older and relying on others to do more than I felt comfortable with.  Like  you said, since we're paying so much and devoting time, energy, emotions, etc., we want to maximize our chances of success.  Keep us updated!

@milanjayla Sorry for your loss and challenges with blocked tubes.  That's good that you were able to have them unblocked.  I have done acupuncture and it was nice.  But what I realized is that the main purpose of it is to help keep you stress free and zen.  Over time I decided that for me personally my spiritual life was better suited for helping to keep me relaxed and happy than acupuncture.  So basically I would say acupuncture is a good option if it's what works best for you.  It's equal but no better IMO than other tools like meditation, therapy, prayer, etc.  Pick what you like.

@Knottie1456036854 Welcome to the board and big hugs.  You have been through so much and my heart goes out to you.  Your story just shows how strong women are.  I pray that all goes well with this transfer for you.  I have a connection to Genesis Genetics as well here in Michigan through the clinical trial I'm a part of that includes PGS.  I'll be 38 this year as well.  I'll be looking forward to hearing more about how things are going for you.  Thanks for sharing and joining.

    @Tulips29 Thanks for the welcome!

  • Hi everyone!
This is my first official post. I'm a longtime lurker but reluctant poster.  I am 39, hubby 41 with unexplained secondary infertility trying for almost two years.  I only have one tube and ovary due to a dermoid removal in my early 20s. We had a letrazole pregnancy almost a year ago that resulted in a miscarriage at 11 weeks and a chemical pregnancy two months before that. Since then we have been through two IUI's, one fresh IVF cycle and one FET, all BFN.  I am currently undergoing the lupron microflare protocol and on day 5 of stims with weekly acupuncture. I really find this board to be a huge source of comfort and support...makes me feel a little bit less alone in this process.

  • Good morning everyone! I've been on the February/March board but my FET will be probably early April, so I thought I'd jump in here.

Quick bio: NTNP/TTC since April 2013. Visited doc in March 2015 for first round of labs (including DH's first SA), DX of male factor motility/count but good candidates for IUI due to only minor issues. Two cancelled IUI's due to serious loss of motility/count after wash. Started IVF meds in January, ER on February 17.

I'm loving this group of people and the support we can all find here. Happy Monday!

  • So thanks for the support on here everyone but looks like we won't be doing ivf after all right now.  We decided asking my parents for money just isn't the right thing to do and taking out a loan or a no interest credit card would be very hard financially, plus with the likelihood that ivf might not work on the first try, we couldn't afford any more cycles.  So we are going to look into a scholarship program or try to sign up for a study and wait a little longer.  $15 k is just a huge amount for us.  It's hard for me to just accept that so I'm not giving up but I wish we were just moving forward and we had unlimited funds!  Anyway GL to all of you on this board and I wish you nothing but success in your ivf cycles!

@thejessicanicol My nurse also told me standard Claritin was okay (NO decongestant) but when I asked about what I could take to help me sleep (I have mild insomnia) she said that a Benadryl would be okay once in a while if I really needed it. It seems a bit contradictory, but I guess it's better to have one allergy pill every few days and get some sleep, than to be exhausted. Good luck!

@milanjayla I have had a couple of acupuncture appointments myself now. I have heard mixed reviews about it helping with IVF success, but great reviews about it helping with anxiety, so I thought I'd try it out. After three appointments I can't say that my anxiety is hugely different, so I am going to go once a week for a little bit longer before I make a decision. I have lots of other tools that I am using too to try to maintain a zen mind and body. I have a sticky note on my computer with some questions to ask myself that require you to be positive (what are 5 strengths/positive traits of mine? what am I looking forward to in the next week, etc.) and I pray all the time. Best of luck to you!

  • @thejessicanicol oh man, I feel ya on the allergies. I live in NYC and it gets BAD for me around April/May to the point where I want to hibernate until the dust and pollen is gone. I was out in LA recently and my allergies flared up out of nowhere. I was surprised I got them so early in February. I love how this board can give us advice on what to be prepared for in terms of stims + allergy relief..I had no idea I'll be limited to only certain options next month.

Is it just me, or does time seem to be crawling while I'm waiting for stims and retrieval? I'm still on BCP until the 21st and I can't wait to get the show on the road already!

  • I had to go buy new pain meds, allergy pills, and antacids (Tylenol, Benadryl, and Tums) when I started stims. I usually take Pepto Bismol but that's not allowed, and Tylenol is the only pain reducer you're allowed to take. So now I'm well stocked on all those things! I've got two or three brands of every possible medication!

  • FINALLY AF decided to show up!! Spoke to the nurse and on cycle day 5 I get to start BCP. March 22 I see our nurse to order meds and get my calendar. Felt like it was never going to come! It feels so weird when you are trying to get pregnant and get excited about AF lol.

@tulips29 I totally feel you! If the end of March could just get here like, tomorrow, that would be swell lol

  • Hi ladies! I'm also not 100% sure I belong in this board. I had 3 failed IUI's and I'm getting ready for IVF with PGS and FET. Today was my HSG and thankfully it was normal, so tomorrow we should set a start date, (possibly next week) meds have been ordered, can't wait!
I thought I was somewhat knowledgeable but there's so much information involved in this process!!! I'm anxious to see how I respond, I had 1 big folli in all my IUI's ( I think a 2nd smaller one in one of the cycles) but always only on the right ovary, so even though my AMH was really high I hope I produce enough good ones...
Good luck to all of you !

@thejessicanicol yay for AF showing up... Now if she can come visit me, I'd be really, really happy. Lol My cycle usually comes every 21-28 days and go figure the month I need it to come, were up to day 25 now  I've been on Lupron since Thursday and I would like to start stimming already. Each day that goes by is delaying my transfer (which was tentatively scheduled for 3/18).

@yellow22 Welcome & good luck in IVF. You're in the right place

@emgem819I'm sorry that your financial situation is preventing you and your partner from moving forward with IVF at this time.  Me and MH were in a similar situation and had taken a break before I lucked up on a job that included insurance coverage for IVF.  I pray that you can find the funding or coverage soon through a scholarship or job.

@dragonfaerie That was my experience with acupuncture as well.  After several visits I didn't notice a difference that was worth the price for me.  Prayer has worked better for me and thankfully it's free!  With my new job acupuncture is actually covered but I just wasn't impressed enough to go back.  But I encourage whoever may get a lot out of it to go for it.  Everybody is different.

@yelllow22Welcome to the family!  I know it's a bittersweet feeling to be happy you found this group while wishing you hadn't needed to.  But the support and information you'll find is invaluable.

  • @capps42613 thanks! Hope AF comes soon, what a rollercoaster, going from not wanting to get AF, now anxiously awaiting!
@zantster you are absolutely right, and I'm so happy to have found you all. I read in a blog something like "don't worry about what can go wrong, think about what could go right" ... Trying to remember that everyday
On a separate note, it's been great to read everyone's experiences with acupuncture, I have been considering it but my schedule is so crazy that trying to make it to the appointments may be more stressful than going without it, so it's good to know that while I t worked for some, it didn't for others

  • Is anyone else finding it super hard to think about anything else? I'm always thinking about ivf or reading about ivf it seems. So anxious, nervous and excited!
    <a href="http://www.thebump.com/?utm_source=ticker&utm_medium=HTML&utm_campaign=tickers" title="Ovulation Calculator"><img src="http://global.thebump.com/tickers/tt1d2ae0" alt=" Pregnancy Ticker" border="0"  /></a>
  • This is just such a frustratingly slow process.  I got the OK to move forward with a pregnancy from my oncologist back in September, and saw my RE within a week.  And here we are over 5 months later and all we have done is spend lots of money with nothing yet to show for it.  I am *finally* starting the egg retrieval process, so at least I have something to actually DO now.  Started with the ovulation prediction testing this morning, looking for the LH surge so I can start my Estrace.

The last time I did all of this, (no pill meds that time around--just menopur/follistim/ganirelix because I was still normal ovary-wise at that time), the meds and mixing and all of that were a great distraction from a new cancer diagnosis.  I actually had my egg retrieval on a Sunday, got an IUD on Monday, had a Portacath placed Tuesday and started chemo Wednesday.  This time, I feel like I need something else to distract me from all this fertility madness.  I'm just hoping I get some actual follicle action.  I had 21 eggs retrieved 3 years ago when I was healthy/before chemo.  Now, with the damage to my ovaries they only saw 3-4 follicles on each side in my ovarian reserve ultrasound.  My AMH was I think 0.3; hence the big guns for meds this go around.

This whole process is just sort of surreal.  My 2 sisters each had kids young (early/mid 20's), and my brother is 32 and just had his 3rd.  I waited until I was 35 to make a decision.  My husband and I had actually been 'trying' to get pregnant/off BCPs for 3 weeks when I found my tumor.  After being together for 17 years.  I feel like I waited too long to make a decision, and now I have all this extra drama and $$$ to deal with in a no-guarantees attempt to have a baby.  Frustrating, to say the least.
