Best diaper rash ointment/cream?

I've been using dr. Smiths cream on DDs little bum at every diaper changed. Last week she developed a diaper rash and was prescribed nystatin. I was instructed to use it 3 times a day and follow it up with either Destitan or Dr. Smiths (or anything with zinc). I've been doing this religiously, and while the rash went away for a few days, it's starting to creep up again. What cream/ointment do y'all use on your LO?

Re: Best diaper rash ointment/cream?

  • We were using boudreaux's butt paste but couldn't get rid of stubborn diaper rash- I switched to making my own wipes and using aquaphor. Her little bum is perfect now.

  • I've been thinking about making wipes as well. Can you tell me how you make yours?
    Thanks!
  • Sure! I cut a paper towel roll in half with a serrated kitchen knife. Bounty works great. For a bounty mega roll- heat 2 cups water and then stir in 2 tbsp coconut oil until melted. Then mix in 1 tbsp baby soap- I use an organic oatmeal calendula wash. For a regular sized paper towel roll, you need less liquid so I do 1 cup water, 1 tbsp coconut oil, 1/2 tbsp baby soap. Get an air tight Tupperware container that the half roll will fit in, place cut side down, pour liquid over roll and let sit to absorb. When it's all soaked up you can pull the cardboard tube out of the middle, and then continue to pull wipes from the center of the roll.
  • I love Sudocream. One of my good friends swears by coconut oil. My daughter has been battling thrush for the last month and was also prescribed nystatin for that. I eventually gave up on that and went to coconut oil - her thrush cleared up in just a couple days.
  • Anything with zinc! We use Butt Paste because I got a sample as a gift, but our pedi said anything with zinc.
  • Thank you all! I made some wipes for her this morning and will try the coconut oil as well!
  • Our doctor told us to use aquaphor and it helps. Also, we use water wipes, 99.99% water and .01% fruit. It's helped. Ours had a bad rash and it turns out it was the wipes and formula.
  • Triple cream paste. It's pricy but works great
  • Sudocream!
  • I've been using A&D. And with my LOs first Diaper Rash, I used that cream, and his rashed was clear in about a day and a half. However, I think it sll depends on your baby, as well. Each baby is different, and reacts differently with certain creams. So one cream could work for your LO, and one cream won't/wouldn't.
  • We bought Honest Company's Diaper Rash cream and it was gone in just 2 days!
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • Sudocream or Medicated Penaten cream. They work miracles!!
  • We've tried a few different creams, but Sensi-Care seems to work the best. It's what the NICU used, and we've had success with it.

  • My pediatrician just recommend triple paste.
  • Our baby had a diaper rash within the first 10 days. We tried Butt Paste, desitin, and rinsing her off with water a couple of times a day with no success. Burt Bees with 40% zinc fixed it right up in a day or so. Right now I've switched baby to the Burt Bees multi purpose ointment (which smells amazing) and only use the Burt Bees with zinc when she starts getting red. I wipe with just cloth wipes and water when I'm home and Jackson Reese wipes (Amazon) when I'm out.

Prior to having a baby I really didnt think it made any different what diaper cream you used since the active ingredient is Zinc. But what Ive learned so far is each baby reacts differently to different diaper creams. I've seen butt paste work wonders on other babies and my sister in law swears by Desitin but both did nothing for my baby. Don't be afraid to try different ones.
  • We LOVE Boudreaux's butt paste, but buy the maximum strength...the red tube.  Works wonders.
  • Triple paste and aquaphor
  • Boudreaux's butt paste or Aquaphor

  • Burts Bees petroleum free multipurpose ointment or anointment baby balm.  I tried live clean diaper ointment but found DS had skin breakdown within a few days. Changing diapers more often has helped too!

  • Early on my daughter had a bad rash.  It even bled!  We kept using butt paste and it just did nothing.  We finally tried maximum strength desitin and it cleared up in a few days.  Now that it's gone I use aquafor and it hasn't come back.
  • I like Boudreaux butt paste. The yellow tube is good for prevention but when LO does get a little red I use the red tube which is higher zinc concentration. At night I use aquaphor which I think is better for prolonged period between diaper change.  He's never had more than slight redness which disappears in a day.
  • We use desitin, but I found the best thing for us was to switch diapers to clear up persistent diaper rash.
Honest diapers and babyganics gave DD terrible stubborn diaper rash and switching to pampers or huggies has kept her from getting anything more than occasional slight redness that desitin or a little powder will clear up in a day.

  • DD had a rash in the first 2 weeks of her life . Our pediatrician gave us a recipe to make our own butt paste and DD has never had a diaper rash ever again. It is two parts eucerin, two parts A & D , and one part mylanta . It cost around $40 to get all the ingredients  but 3 months later we have yet to purchase any of the ingredients again so it's pretty cost effective.
  • We've been dealing with a persistent rash  and have tried a lot of creams .. Desetin but paste babyganics honest co and butts bees . I know it hurts Dd so  I tried so many in desperation. Last week our pedi recommended trying bacitracin ointment and aquafor on top of that . So far this has been working she also said to dry area with a washcloth or burp cloth completely after wiping before applying
  • My LO is only a month old and hasn't had horrible rashes at all. However, when he did start looking red and a little bumpy around his butt I put coconut oil on it and it cleared up before night time! Seriously, coconut oil is amazing stuff. It can be used to make your own wipes as well. I haven't tried making my own yet (I eventually plan to do cloth wipes) but I think most people just do water and coconut oil for a wipe solution. If anyone is struggling with wipes or rash cream, try coconut oil. If it doesn't work, you can always use it for cooking and get your money's worth still, but I'd bet you it works :)

  • You need to go back to dr. Nystatin is for yeast.

We we aquaphor as a daily preventive. Butt paste or a & d when there is a rash (like from diarrhea).
  • I have been using A+D ointment at every diaper change as a prevention and when he did have a rash, I used the A+D creme to clear it up and used damp cloth to wipe. No diaper rash since I've been using the ointment at every change.
  • We started out with Butt Paste, but what we found worked much better was Goo-Goo Baby Bum Balm by Wild Carrot Herbals. I got it as a gift and now I swear by it!

Mine gets a rash when I use various creams, but not when I use powder. Am I the only one who uses powder and no cream?

It's not recommended that you use powder since baby can breathe in the small particles.

Oh, no wonder. Good to know.

If you do use powder, make sure it is not talcum powder/talc. Also, you can put some in your hand and then put that on baby instead of shaking it directly onto baby. That is less chance of them breathing it in.

  • Aquaphor. I swear by it. Ive trusted the cream for my tattoos for years and i found out they made a rash cream and its done wonders for my son. It says gone with in 6 hours, but it's gone by the next two diaper changes. He's on nutramigen so he poop is very acidic and we change him as soon as he poops but he'll still get diaper rash and I'm telling you it clears up before the day is done but I apply it every diaper change/everyother diaperchabge to keep it that way because of his formula.
