Baby powder?

Any mama's using baby powder?? I've heard all the gripe about baby's inhaling it and having breathing problems but how likely is that.... Little man's "downstairs" gets stuck on his diaper and I feel so bad having to peel it off! Any suggestions or alternatives?

Re: Baby powder?

  • Haven't used baby powder for the reason you stated. Also I have a little girl so not sure if that makes a difference as nothing has ever gotten "stuck"
I use Vaseline during each diaper change. Maybe that would prevent anything from sticking.

  • that's the most stupid thing I've ever heard I use baby powder almost every nappy change why would he breath it in it's going no where near his face unless people people are putting it on from a ridiculous distance making powder go everywhere
  • I use caldesene baby powder on her neck and bottom. Her neck gets extra raw due to spitting up frequently. I just make sure to apply it from really close so we dont have a huge cloud of babypowder.
  • My pharmacist friend and doc both advised against baby powder due to yeast infections. Instead you're supposed to use Vaseline. I like the powder though; it keeps him so dry
  • The problem i have with vaseline is it doesnt help when lo is red already. I use aquaphor at night sonce we dont do nighttime diapers (unless its a poop or leaks) but otherwise i use powder. Lo has had no rashes or red bottom. Neck rolls are another story.
  • @FatPony is right. The problem with powder is not inhalation, it's yeast infections and UTIs.
  • What about trying some coconut oil or calendula cream ?
  • Also burts bees makes a petroleum free Vaseline alternative.
  • I use powder in my little guys stuff because they do get hot and sticky.  I always apply to my hand first away from baby to reduce what he breaths in.  Powder doesn't cause yeast but cornstarch based powders will definitely feed yeast. So you know, if it looks like something might be going on then don't use it.
  • I echo what PP said. I use old school Johnson & Johnson's baby powder but not at every diaper change, just maybe once a day. Dab some on my hand away from his face and tap it on that sweet bottom!

I used cornstarch on my daughters belly and back because she is very prone to heat rash.
  • I use baby powder every diaper change unless he's red which hasn't happened except once and then I used desitin at night I use a medicated baby powder which keeps him dry all night, I just cover the inside of the diaper and put it on him so there's no risk in inhalation and I've been using baby powder since he was born with no uti or yeast infections and its been four months
  • For diaper rash we use anti-Monkey Butt because it has calamine to help with the soreness.
  • I use it because my son has super sensitive skin and if I don't use it, he instantly gets a diaper rash even though I change his diaper often. So do whatever your comfortable with and whatever you feel is best, you're the mom! Or speak to the pediatrician if that would make you feel better, see what they suggest.
  • I don't have an alternative, but I strongly recommend people do not use Johnson and Johnson baby powder (or anything of theirs!). A woman in my town just won a lawsuit against them. She used their powder and got cervical cancer, and unfortunately passed away. There was proof dating back to the 70's that J&J new their products had cancer causing ingredients and did nothing but hide it. They are a disgusting company, and I don't want my sweet baby any where near a product that comes from them. Just a heads up.
