HPV - anyone?

So I just received my pap results from last Wednesday which was my first prenatal visit (I'm almost 12 wks). The results were positive! I had HPV years ago (the strand that causes cervical cancer), but it cleared up on its own. I've been married 6 months and with only my husband for the last 3 years. This is terrifying especially now that I'm pregnant. Has anyone else received a positive result while pregnant?

Re: HPV - anyone?

  • I've had a positive result before, (and like you, it cleared, but I don't think I had the strain that causes cancer) but I don't have my next pap test until next Wed. I'll check back in if it's positive! It's been years (I know, I know!) since I've been tested.

  • I had HPV...i tested positive before i even got pregnant.  I had it during my pregnancy and then my pap after pregnancy was clear!  I had asked my doctor if there was any concern and if it would/could affect my pregnancy and she showed no concern.  Talk to your doctor but you should be fine (in regards to it not being an issue with pregnancy)

  • I believe the positive can come and go. But if it goes away you can wait longer between paps. I tested positive last pregnancy. Negative at my after pregnancy pap
  • I am not sure if you mean that you had a positive HPV test or if the Pap smear was abnormal. I Haven't had experience with either, but if your pap was abnormal they can still do a colposcopy during pregnancy to check the abnormal areas and can do small biopsies If needed. If there is anything that is concerning they will follow up regularly throughout the pregnancy. Usually cervical dysplasias are very slow growing, so early catches can be watched carefully for some time before removal becomes necessary.

If you meant that you tested positive for HPV, that shouldn't risk to your pregnancy. It is very uncommon to pass from mom to baby during birth.
  • @bnt1023 I also have had this happen try to remain calm even though it feels anxiety provoking as I felt that too. The results and come and go at random it would appear from
what I have read but know it's incredibly common and does not appear to cause any risk to our babies so take ease in that.

I know when I was first diagnosed I also had the cancerous strain. My dr just has me do paps more regularly if I it happens to show up on my yearly. It's not likely to cause problems with the baby or any complications but your dr may choose to monitor your cervical tissue or not depending on how concerned your dr is. Know you are not alone and thanks for posting this it helps take the stigma of not wanting to talk about things like this.

  • I had it previously and my last two paps were clear (finally)! My doc did a PAP and full workup 3 weeks ago at the first OBGYN appointment and only calls me before the next if something's up- happy to say I haven't heard from her. HPV can come and go though- doesn't necessarily mean you healed from it and then caught it again. As long as you get regular PAPs and visit the doc often, you can keep an eye on it easily. My sister works at Planned Parenthood in education outreach programs, and she said that the body can self-heal from HPV but it could lie dormant too. You should be AOK though. Good luck!
