Trying to Get Pregnant

Anyone else have PCOS? - Just Diagnosed

Hello :) My name is Megan, and this is my first post! My husband and I have recently decided to start trying for our first baby. I was having some issues, so I thought it would be best to get checked out to see what's going on. Turns out that I have PCOS. I don't know anyone personally who is affected by this, so I am reaching out for advice and just support in general.

Thank you in advance!

Re: Anyone else have PCOS? - Just Diagnosed

  • Hey Megan... I have no experience with PCOS, but just wanted to offer a friendly suggestion of changing your screen name. I'm assuming your SN is your full name, middle initial and all.  Not the best for privacy/internet safety.

  • I have PCOS and there are many women on this board and other boards that have also been diagnosed. Is there anything specific that you would like to know? Symptoms can vary drastically from person to person. I also second what @difazette said.

I don't have PCOS, but my cousin does...and she literally just texted me that she's due in September. They have been trying for a while now, so it "doesn't make getting pregnant impossible." Her words, not mine.  (I hope this doesn't sound horrible. I've been sitting here for 15 minutes trying to think if this sounds mean or inconsiderate. It's definitely not meant to be either. It's meant to be reassuring.)
  • Hi and welcome. I have PCOS. My advice as a preliminary thing is to read Taking Charge of Your Fertility and to start temping and charting. ... PCOS does not make getting KU impossible, but it can be frustrating at times. If you have specific questions, I'm sure someone will be happy to answer them.

  • I have PCOS, too.  I agree with @cjt121413 to start temping and charting.  One big thing about PCOS is irregular cycles so this really helps with knowing at least a little bit of what your body is doing... or if it is doing anything at all!

I have PCOS as well and was able to get pregnant. It's troubling when you get any diagnosis, but Pcos is generally pretty manageable and not a ttc death sentence. What specifically would you like to know?
  • Hi and welcome! I have Pcos as well and am currently under the care of an RE. If you have specific questions, I'm happy to help, though I was only diagnosed last month. Unlike previous posters, I found temping and charting frustrating and fruitless. Everyone's situation is different, so you'll have to work to find what works best for you. Good luck!

Hello! As PP's have mentioned, many people experience PCOS differently. Do you have any specific questions?
I was diagnosed a few years ago and began taking Metformin, and soon after began losing weight and had a decrease in other symptoms. We didn't try to get KU right away so I'm not sure how quick the Metformin helps in fertility, but I was fortunate to get a BFP when we began trying (and PCOS was not attributed to the loss).
There is a lot of support through Bump. Good luck!
  • Hi!

I was diagnosed last Oct. See my signature for history. PCOS, as mentioned by others, is very case-by-case. In my case, I have no symptoms except that my cycle is longer than average (36 - 40 days). We are having a little harder time TTC, but doc keeps reassuring me that it is possible to get pregnant, it just might take a little longer than most! Main thing is to reach out and get help from an RE. Don't sit back and wait. We waited longer than we should've and I regret that now. GL to you!!

  • Hello and Welcome!

I was diagnosed in October. PCOS effects everybody differently. In my case, I do not get a cycle or ovulate on my own. My RE is pretty sure IVF is going to be our best route.

That is me personally. The best thing to do is cut out sweets/sugars and dairy. That will help your insulin. This is not an end all. Just a bump in the road.

  • I don't think OP is coming back but for those lurking and @harrypotterandcats, not everyone with PCOS has insulin resistance (I do not). While cutting out sweets and eating an overall healthy diet is probably a good rule of thumb, it may not help everyone with PCOS.

  • Infrequent poster but a member of the PCOS club.  I didn't realize there were so many of us on here.  Maybe we can do a check-in every once in a while.
  • Same boat here! I'm not going to post my experience because I don't want to freak anyone out lol, but for the MOST part (unless you're me) PCOS is very manageable. The only piece of advise I would give is to PLEASE follow up with your PRIMARY care physician, not just your gyno about your diagnosis. PCOS can cause high cholesterol and other physical conditions, not just reproductive, and you want to keep an eye on that.

  • Hello all! I just want to say that I greatly appreciate all of your feedback! Knowing that there are so many women going through the same thing definitely gives me a level of comfort.

My husband and I are going to the doctor this Wednesday to discuss everything, possibly getting on clomid, and taking something to bring my estrogen levels back up. Any suggestions of questions to ask at our visit?
  • There is a lot of information already on this board about Clomid (use the search function to find threads). Are you working with an OBGYN or RE (reproductive endocronologist). I would recommend working with an RE because most OBGYNs are not specialized enough and often don't provide proper monitoring. Have you had an HSG to make sure your uterus looks good and tubes are clear? This should be done before you start taking any fertility meds (if not the meds are pointless and possibly dangerous).

Ask if you will be monitored (with ultrasounds and blood work), how many cycles your dr will prescribe Clomid before trying something else (eg. Adding in a trigger shot to help with ovulation, switching to letrozole or injectibles, when IUI or IVF will be considered). Make sure to discuss the risk of multiples.

  • I've been working with an OB. I'm sure they will be able to refer me to an RE. Thank you for the advice! I'll make sure to add those questions to my list.

And I'm so sorry, but im not totally aware of what all the acronyms mean. What is HSG?
  • A hysterosalpingogram (HSG) is an X-ray test where they inject dye into your uterus and Fallopian tubes to check for blockages.
