Virtual Shower

Hey Everyone
Knowing that @yogahh isn't having a shower and @kbrands7 along with other STM's aren't having second showers but are registering got me wanting to host a virtual shower of sorts (no hostess gift needed lol ;)  ). I was really active in boards/forums while I planned my wedding and one of the cool things we did was buy each other registry gifts. It felt so much like a community already that buying gifts seemed natural. I've tried to think through how this can work but I'm not sure I've got all the kinks figured out.

Here's what I've got.
1. Use the Google Sheets link below to enter yourself as a participant
2. Look at and purchase gifts for others on our BMB
3. Have the gifts sent to the registry recipient (addresses should be kept private by the registry company (I know it is for BRU))
4. If you receive something revisit the Google Doc and put an "x" in the box showing that you've received already. This doesn't stop others from sending you more but it will help us figure out if anyone is being left out.
5. Share pictures of your gifts and send thank you's here on this thread

Lurkers.... don't be offended if you add your information and no one buys you anything. It's a little creepy to buy gifts for women who've never posted or only post on Hump Day Bump Day. This is a urge for you to get involved and participate so you can join our little family/ community.

  • What a cute idea. I would have loved to buy everyone something but our crappy currency will not allow for it. I'm talking R18 to a single dollar. But thumbs up for the thread @Charla1224
  • Eh idk about having first and last names on display. It wouldn't be hard to look up addresses from there, especially if the spouse is listed on the registry, too.
  • O flip @sarawifenow I didn't even think about that. Is it easy to find addresses in the US with only a name and surname?

Extremely. Especially if you have spouse names and the city and state that is listed on the registry. For example, BRU give first and last name of both parents, sometimes the maiden name of the mother (if elected), the city and state that they live in, and the due date. A quick Google search would give someone plenty of information.

ETA: maybe a PM would be better for this and people who want to participate can do so there. That way not every Tom, Dick, and Harry can access the Google doc with everyone's info. Just a suggestion...
  • @sarawifenow Cue creepy music!! Eeek!! That would freak me the hell out! Best to be safe than sorry ladies!!

Ok.... Just trying to gage... is that a really big deal for everyone? I'm just asking because it's not a big deal for me. First name, last name, and city.... I've provided that information in a variety of public spaces, including news articles.

For me, it isn't about people who participate on the board so much, but the random lurkers (and who knows who else) that could find home addresses, work places, and so on with that information. There's a lot of scary people out there.
  • I think this is a GREAT idea. I'd love to participate, but @sarawifenow has a great point. Most of you ladies that I interact with on almost a daily basis I feel fine with, but there are other lurkers and who knows who else that might take a peek at our information. There are a lot of weirdos out there, even on this website. I don't want to take any chances with people finding my home address and stalking me or something. lol Can we think of a better way to do this?

I think the sentiment is sweet.. but you never know who is on here for reals

I mean @ladysamlady or @doozer1345  could really be 800 pound men looking for some kicks

Dammit, @yogahh way to blow their cover!
  • @sarawifenow I totally get that and agree. I also think that if I REALLY wanted to find personal information on anyone here I probably could using the small hints and trail everyone leaves behind as internet user. Idk. I believe in internet safety and being a smart internet user (which is why I didn't join the Facebook groups... way too much information there), I'm just not sure if my registry shares enough information that I should be concerned. But I may be totally naive.

Not trying to be creepy, but you can totally find all of your Facebook information and address by the link you posted in the Google doc...
  • @yogahh HOW DID YOU GET THAT PICTURE OF ME?
I am a stalker, dont you remember???

    cat fail animated GIF

  • @sarawifenow I am 100% aware of what the public is able to view via my Facebook page and although it may seem like you could find where I live, it's not accurate information.

Anyway... no big deal. If you all aren't interested... lets just move on.

  • Anyway, you know @kbrands7 would get all the gifts  :)
  • We did something similar to this on my board on the Knot and we used Elfster, registered for a few things we would like in the agreed upon price range and went from there.  I was the one who organized it, and it went pretty smoothly. Might be another option?
  • While I think this was in good intentions, I don't think there will be a lot of participants (maybe I'm wrong). But I wouldn't want my information out there, along with the fact that I will have a newborn. Whoever wants to participate in it, good for you! But it most definitely is not for me. Or my family. Safety is much more important.

    LOL! If only.
  • Not sure what is going on with these quote boxes.

OP, I wasn't trying to upset you or make it seem like I am not interested and, while I do think that this is a sweet idea, I was just trying to point out that you may want to do it in a more private setting. No need to get upset.

  • @sarawifenow I'm not upset. Sorry if it came off as if I am. I don't agree but I'm in no way upset.

LMAO! I cannot stop laughing. You just tarnished these poor ladies names forever. This is what we will picture from now on. They must steal their HDBD from poor, unsuspecting, pretty ladies from another BMB ;)
