Caesar Dressing/Salads

Pre-pregnancy I would eat Caesar salads allllll the time but when I got pregnant and heard you're not suppose to consume Caesar dressing I was super bummed out (I also like blue cheese which I have cut out as well) today at work we have a potluck lunch and of course one of my providers brought Caesar salad but states she thinks its safe to eat because its usually not made with anchovies anymore but I've also heard the dressing contains raw egg... anyone know the for sure answer to this or have you been eating this while pregnant?

Re: Caesar Dressing/Salads

  • I've been eating a ton of caeser salad; I figure commercial dressings probably don't contain raw egg since they would go bad quickly and the restaurant/bottle label would have to disclose it.
  • Loading the player...
  • Most dressings sold at the grocery store do not have raw egg (hence they're sold unrefrigerated). If the dressing is sold refrigerated, check the ingredients, as it most likely has raw egg. I've avoided all cesar dressings with raw egg due to risk of listeria (which includes most prepared by restaurants), but was still able to find cesar dressing at the grocery store that was completely safe.
  • I've eaten a couple spoonfuls of raw cookie dough batter sooooo....I think the dressing would be ok!!
  • Short of going to a trendy fresh locally sourced produce restaurant ... The odds of a place serving you fresh made Caesar is pretty low- most restaurants buy pre-made dressings which are definitely safe. You can always ask... I do all of the time when it comes to dressings and soft cheeses when I'm out. Only once has it been unpasteurized cheeses/dressings- which I was informed of right away. You are just as likely/if not more so to be exposed to listeria from lettuce and cantaloupes. There was a big dole recall recently for bagged lettuce. Which is exactly what my OB told me as well.

I would agree with the pp about asking at restaurants.  Our experiences have been a bit different however, as I've been to many restaurants that still make their dressing with raw eggs. And I'm not really the trendy,  fresh, locally grown restaurant type. The pp is right about bagged salad though, so I actually eliminated these completely because she is right about there being risk. It's really not much harder to just make your own.
  • I've always just asked at restaurants if it's made with raw eggs. I think they're all made with anchovies though, in the form of paste, which kind of grosses me out.
  • Honestly even if there are raw eggs in the dressing i doubt you are consuming enough for it to even matter.

Haha! Ewww. Johnny Depp! Noooo.  ;)
  • What pp's have said.  Also, as long as the cheese has been pasteurized it is okay.

@jenl1681 Yeah unfortunately some are made with raw egg and anchovies which they say to avoid... BUT if its pasteurized I guess it's ok? I am just a worry wart and always choose to avoid things if there is a debate but like others have said they eat it and are perfectly fine. Pregnancy has so many 'no-no's'... its exhausting!!
  • Anchovies are fine for pregnancy (they are a low mercury fish) but are typically quite salty so if sodium is a concern watch how much you eat... The real concern w/Caesar dressing is raw egg. Most commercial dressings has been pasteurized and are safe, some restaurants make theirs from scratch so ask... And if you want to make it at home consider pasteurized eggs (yes they cost a bit more but are great if you have a craving for undercooked egg in some form) or substitute it out.

    enjoy your salads!!!
  • I gave up on paying attention to what foods not to eat so long ago, I would just eat it all! The only thing I've followed is the no-alcohol rule. I avoided raw cookie dough early on, and now I'm just avoiding making cookies because with my new-found hunger there is no way I could keep it out of my mouth.

This isn't advice on anything, just know you're not alone if you give up on any of these "rules"!
  • I break all the rules. I would even think twice about eating ceaser salad, as long as it was fresh.
