Scratching baby?!?!? Anyone else

Does anyone have a baby that likes to scratch? As my baby drinks he really gets into his bottle and scratches my hand. Should I be saying no, i know he doesn't mean it. He's only 22 weeks.

Re: Scratching baby?!?!? Anyone else

  • My LO is scratching and pinching a lot lately, especially during feedings. She also just started grabbing our faces and hair more too. I have been removing her hand and saying no that hurts mommy, but not in a raised voice. As a FTM I have no clue if she is catching on by any means, but I feel like consistent behavior and reaction may help in the long run.

  • Oh yeah! When she drinks she scratches her head. We cosleep and she LOVES to scratch my face to wake me up... She got me good under my nose and it looked like I had a booger or something...that was fun to go places with haha.
  • I was just reading in Wonder Werks that babies are getting to the age where they can discern tone in our voices. So it is a good time to redirect baby in a different tone when doing something potentially harmful or negative.

  • Yep, my LO was scratching me while feeding too. I was blocking him or saying, "Ow that hurts me" with a little bit of a tone, and moving his hand. And actually, I think it's
gotten better since I started telling him to stop!  He's scratching clothes and stuff too. A new discovery haha!
  • Mine doesn't do it when he's eating but does scratch, hit, pinch, or pull hair when he's upset or excited. I usually just say "ow" calmly and remove his hand. Sucks but at this age they have no clue and I don't think they will for some time.

  • My girl loves a wee scratch. Sometime like a wee gentle loving one...sometimes her wee claws dig in haha
  • Yeah, our lo varies between scratching (also usually when drinking his bottle), to caressing my face (which is so weird ds1 would smack me in the face ds2 is so gentile! )

  • Yes! He even scratches the mesh in his pack n play while he sleeps. I always joke that he's sharpening his claws in his sleep. His nails literally grow longer within a day of cutting them. He loves to scratch my arms and his face. He actually scratches himself to the point of bleeding! It's awful! I cut and file them at least every other day, but they are still sharp.
  • My almost 6-month-old has started hitting himself in the head with one hand repeatedly while I'm nursing him ... he's obviously not hurting himself or he would stop, but I've been stopping him by gently putting his arm back down or giving him my finger to hold on to with that hand. Goofball!
  • My baby also scratches. She does it as a comfort thing because she likes to graphics a grip of my husband's beard or chest hair when she eats. She's started doing it to me to but it doesn't hurt unless her nails need clipping. So I don't mind it.
  • My LO one does this as well.  Sometimes it hurts badly enough that I have a knee-jerk reaction and yell out but really she has no idea what she's doing and then I feel bad lol.

  • I have had scratches all over my chest for the last two months (received while breastfeeding).  One was near a nipple, and I bled while pumping. :(  I also get "thumped" a lot - I've heard it's part of an instict to get milk to flow faster.  When he gets a bottle, he usually has a fierce hold on the bottle and/or our hands (and sometimes thumps the bottle too).

My son also often takes off my glasses and grabs my chin, nose, cheeks, hair, neck (often painfully!). When sitting/standing on my lap he sometimes grabs my face/hair with his hands to secure himself and starts gumming/slobbering over my nose/forehead/etc.
  • My boy was grabbing our faces and digging in his claws something awful, but he's stopped being so rough with me since I started giving him a firm "no" and then stroking my face with his hand, "nice mommy", then I stroke his cheek with my hand, "nice Joseph", every time. DH isn't as consistent as I am and he gets clawed more, my in laws don't do it and bear the scars, haha.
