August 2016 Moms

What are you reading?

I'm curious about what everyone is reading. Is it motherhood/pregnancy/birth related or not necessarily? A little of both for me: a friend sent me Louise Erdrich's memoir of motherhood, which is fantastic (I always love her work), but I'm also reading a new story collection titled FOX TOOTH HEART.

What are you reading?

Re: What are you reading?

  • I absolutely love reading! I have over 400 books on my Nook. That being said, between work, the 3 kids at home, and being super tired all the time, I have not read anything for a while. I am going to follow this post so I can get some good ideas what to read when I have the time.

  • As far as parenting books, my husband and I are reading Parenting with Love and Logic (Cline) together. On the whole, though, I get enough motherhood 24/7 so I don't really care to read about it. Reading is an escape!

Right now I'm reading the third book in the Outlander series, a Sherlock Holmes mystery for my book club called The Fifth Heart (Simmons), and S. by J.J. Abrams.

I typically have 4-5 books going at once so I can pick one up based on my mood. :)

  • I'm a huge book nerd - I've got a personal library of over 400
books (physical books, not electronic ones). That being said, I cannot read "non-fiction" books at all. They just do not hold my interest. My neighbor gave me 5 baby books she said she swore by, and I can't get through 1 chapter.

So, I'm catching up on all the books I've bought and never read. First up is Sylvia Plath's "the Bell Jar".
  • I read an average of 300 books a year and even have a book tattoo, but I'm with pp... Reading is an escape for me, so I rarely read 'educational' books. I'm in a bit of a rut right now, so have just been rereading some favorites.
  • I'm reading The Interestings by Meg Wolitzer, really like it.

The best baby-related book I've read lately was Expecting Better by Emily Oster.
  • I think the only book I've read regarding pregnancy is Snookis book called Baby Bumps. Judge away lol but I thought it was a pretty good book.
  • My husband and I have been reading "Pregnancy Day By Day" by Paula Amato, MD and Maggie Bloft, MB BS. It is extremely helpful in gaining an in-depth understanding of all things pregnancy and baby!
  • @WinnieLou82 I loved "The Interestings," such a great book!

I have a stack of baby related books on my nightstand, but I haven't been able to read them yet because I have so much reading for school. Hopefully soon.
    Me: 27 DH: 29
    Baby #1 - DD 8/29/16
    Baby #2 - EDD 4/6/18

  • I love to read and my books range from supernatural to smut lol. I also like fiction and suspense novels, it just depends on my mood. Right now I'm in the middle of a series called Calendar girl, it's 12 books, one for each month. It's definitely more of a smut novel but it's pretty good so far.
    Expecting baby #1 August 2016
Already have three furbabies- Blake, Sydney, and Chester

  • Pregnancy related in the past I've read and enjoyed:

    -Bringing Up Bebe
-The Pregnant Body Book--this book is amazing!  It has great illustrations of what's happening inside your body.

More scientifically oriented but really good:
-Pink Brain, Blue Brain: How Small Differences Grow into Troublesome Gaps — and What We Can Do About It
-What's Going On in There? How the Brain and Mind Develop in the First Five Years of Life
-Making Babies: The Science of Pregnancy

Right now I'm just reading a boring book club book. However I'm going to the library tonight to pick up

Teff love: adventures in vegan Ethiopian cooking, which I'm quite excited about.

On the nonfiction front I loved:
Hungry Planet: What the World Eats,  really interesting--it chronicles eating around the world with pictures for each place. On Amazon it gives a preview.
Material World: A Global Family Portrait; The Righteous Mind: Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion; The Birth of the Pill: How Four Crusaders Reinvented Sex and Launched a Revolution

    Fiction:
And the Mountains Echoed; All the Light We Cannot See; The Princess Bride; Wool Omnibus; The Secret Life of Bees; The Passage

    I want to read:
Station Eleven; Bitter Greens; Fall of Giants; Wolf Hall; Eleanor & Park; Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe; A God in Ruins; The Secret Keeper

I love this thread. I love reading, but being in school has killed my reading. I started "The Kind Mama" and stopped after a few chapters because it felt really preachy and the idea of the food she talked about made me nauseous.

ATM I have to read an autobiography about mental illness for one of my classes and it is rough. I started a book about ADHD and had to stop that after the topic jumping started frustrating me. I'm now reading "the girl in need of a tourniquet" about borderline personality disorder, it is also jumping around quite a bit and has so many analogies that the book isn't making a lot of sense. I can't switch at this point since the paper is due Monday.

  • I'm reading The Queen of the Tearling right now, it's amazing and I wish I had some more time to get through it faster. I should probably read a book on having three kids 2 and under cause I'm still freaking out about that :)
  • I'm glad this thread came up. I can take a look at books that might be good to read after I'm done with the ones I have lined up lol. I love books so much because it's an escape for me. Right now I'm reading "City on Fire" it's not a bad book but hard to get through. I also read What to Expect When You're Expecting in increments and want to read another baby/pregnancy book as well.

  • @ramoseecology A God in Ruins is wonderful!

@angelob88 I started City on Fire and couldn't get in to it.

I'm re-reading the "Outlander" series, they are so good and no matter how many times I read them, I am completely absorbed.  I also love to read and have started (finally) keeping track of what books I read so I don't start to read one that I may have already been through!

  • I'm currently rereading To Kill A Mockingbird so that I can read the new Harper Lee book, but I just saw Harper Lee passed away, so sad!
I'm planning to read Ina May's Guide to Childbirth, but haven't had the desire to get started yet.
  • I commute everyday into the city for work and I used to read so much on the train.  Lately it has been crosswords and sudoku.  This has inspired me to pick up a book again.  Ironically, the last book I read was The Girl on the Train and it was good.    I think I will pick up the Interestings.

^ about to start the first Outlander book. My best friend (who has the same taste in books I do) recommended it.
  • I'm rereading Margaret Weiss's Star of the Guardians series right now, a break in my steady rereading through the Discworld novels.  Also reading A. Geary's "Antiblack Racism and the AIDS Epidemic" for a course I am teaching. And Ian May's "spiritual midwifery"
  • Currently reading Baby Bargains and Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn. Just finished The Rosie Project for my book club.

    Married May 2014
    DD born August 2016

That's funny I just had a new mom recommend pregnancy, childbirth, and the newborn to me along with happiest baby on the block as the only books she really needed in the end. I'm going to see if it's available at the library today.

  • July BMB lurker here. I love the book thread! I swear by Expecting Better for pregnancy (very down to earth funny and I'm anti-fear-mongering since preg is stressful enough!) Great Expectations Pregnancy and Childbirth is nice and scientific with a handy section on how to buy baby gear. Really want The Happiest Baby on the Block so would love to hear from any who read it! For fun I've got the new Brandon Sanderson book Calamity (yay superpowers and dystopian futures haha).
  • @ramoseecology and @ktomorrow  -- The Happiest Baby on the Block is great, but I would actually recommend just watching the DVD rather than reading the book. The hospital where I had my son even requires all new parents to watch it before they go home! You can get all the main ideas from the DVD and even see examples in practice. More helpful than reading it and trying to picture it, IMO.

  • @Katienu The Girl on the Train was so good! One of the better books I've read in a while.

@skelly70 YES!!! I decided I wanted to reread the entire series before I have the baby, so that's what I'm working on currently. I won't admit how many times I've already reread the HP books though.

Me Before You was really good. Kind of slow in the beginning, but it picked up speed after awhile. I've also read some of the other books by the author who wrote that (Jo Jo Moyes).

  • @alyssajrob22 DH read SS through CoS aloud to DS while he was in the womb. We're about to start for this baby. We got the illustrated version for DS, so he'll hang out for a few pages to look at the pictures until he gets bored (he's 2).
  • I really liked Bringing Up Bébé. I think it will help me temper all of the other books I'll read. I'm terrified enough, I don't want to read fear mongering books.
I'm half way finished with Heading Home With Your Newborn: From Birth to Reality. Which is just okay... I also have The Baby Book by Dr. Sears.
I'd like to find a good book on breast feeding.

For fiction I like a good crime thriller or a quasi historical romance when I just want to veg.  I loved the first few books in the Outlander series and on the other side I love anything by Tami Hoag.
  • @lizzitbeIna May's Guide to Breastfeeding is a good one.

  • I'm currently reading the Throne of Glass series and LOVE it!! OMG so good.

i'm also reading I'll give you the sun by Jandy nelson. I love this author.
  • Not reading any baby-related books (I'm a STM and haven't found any "new" books this time around that interest me).

But I am about to start Astonish Me by Maggie Shipstead.  I've recently read In the Unlikely Event by Judy Blume (loved it), The Andy Cohen Diaries (meh) and Neil Patrick Harris's autobiography (really enjoyed that one).
