My teeth HURT!

Third time this has happened during my pregnancy - third distinct tooth.

I get a toothache like there's a cavity or I need a filling and it eventually gets bad enough that I'm crying (I am not the type to cry over pain usually but this is bad).   I go to my dentist, he x-rays and investigates and finds nothing wrong with the tooth.  On the last one I was in so much pain that he gave me a novocaine shot just so I'd get a short window of total relief and that seemed to bring the toothache on to the downswing until it eventually went away.   Been trying to avoid calling emergency number on this one all weekend because I assume like the last two teeth, he will find nothing wrong and tell me I have to tough it out.

My dentist says this happens to a small percentage of pregnant women and they have no idea why.  Has it happened to anyone else?

My dentist assures me that my mouth will go back to normal and my gums will stop bleeding incessantly once I'm done being pregnant.

    i saw your post and thought I would mention my experience and maybe give you hope. I recently had something similar. An annoying pain in one tooth/gum area for a couple weeks. I was eating on the other side of mouth to avoid the annoyance. It got bad enough I thought it was best to go see the dentist and was told (after X-rays) there was no sign of anything wrong. No sign of cavity or holes in gums. That was two weeks ago. Now all of a sudden it's not bothering me anymore. Go figure. I'm just chalking it up to another lovely pregnancy symptom. I didnt have the same amount pain you're having but it was annoying when I would try to eat. So maybe your thing is different but I hoping for you it will just go away like mine randomly did. Good luck!

  • I don't know if you have sinus problems but when mine get really swollen and congested my teeth will start aching really bad. Usually just on one side. I was cleared to take pseudoephedrine and that helps a little. Maybe talk to your ob instead of the dentist?
  • Agree with other PPs.. could be sinus, could be random pregnancy pain.

    Ive had a few issues this pregnancy and last pregnancy with my teeth. This time I've had molar pain due to slightly inflamed gums which food got trapped in (specifically poppy seeds both times lol). Last time it was random pain in my front teeth, likely related to sinuses and my teeth already being sensitive from pregnancy hormones.

    Definitely make an appointment for tomorrow but I wouldn't bother going to emergency.

  • Yikes tooth pain is the worst! I haven't had pain but my teeth are separating so slightly. It feels like I have the worlds. If feels like the worlds biggest gap that is growing by the day. Maybe you're having some shifting too that's causing you so much pain? At least the end is somewhat in sight.
  • Ugh tooth pain is the worst. I haven't had quite this but my gums have been horribly irritated this pregnancy and as a result my teeth are SUPER sensitive. My dentist said there's unfortunately not a lot that can be done it's just another fun side effect of of. {eye roll}
  • Oh wow, I didn't even realize this was a pregnancy thing! I've had one tooth that's been horribly painful and have been stressing about going to the dentist. I hate the dentist.
  • Ugh I have one tooth that hurts so much and it hurts to touch it. Asked my dentist about it and was told there wasn't anything wrong with it. He said if I wanted to come back after the baby and have an X-ray it could be done, but it was probably just one of those things. Hopefully the pain subsides after labour.
  • My dentist has done x-rays on my teeth - my OB said it was okay with a double lead jacket on and just the affected tooth (i.e. not a full mouth x-ray which is like four pictures.)  Same story for me - can't even touch the tooth without searing pain.  When at it's height, I was fearful to eat anything crunchy because god forbid a chunk of something would touch the tooth - there were times it brought me to tears.  Three different teeth so far - three different x-rays - three different times I was told "nothing wrong with the tooth."  They all calmed down after 1-2 weeks, but that is a long time to have such pain!  So exhausting!  I have a full cleaning and full mouth x-rays scheduled at the dentist three weeks after my due date but my dentist said that honestly, he expects to find nothing wrong with my teeth at that appointment.
  • For anyone suffering from this - my dentist did at least say that he is sure, like 100% sure that these problems are related to my gums being totally engorged with all the excess blood in my body right now, and that he is sure that once I'm not pregnant anymore and have a full teeth cleaning this will stop happening.

    He said that being pregnant really increases the amount of plaque below the gumline, and that although they are not sure this is what causes this problem, his best guess is that it's a below gumline irritation gone out of control - so we'll clean it all out once I'm not preggo and it should not build up like this again with my regular cleanings.
