Breaking out like a teenager!

Anyone else I can commiserate with?

I've always had problems with acne as a teenager.  As an adult, I'd have the occasional break out during ovulation or before a period.    When I went off BC 4 years ago, I battled acne for 6 months.

Eventually, I got it under control.

Until now.  I'm BREAKING OUT LIKE CRAZY. :(  Especially around the chin area.

I stopped all my acne topicals after I found out I was pregnant.... and last night I just placed an amazon order for the Belli Skincare wash + spot treatment.  I'm hoping it works!

For those that are having the same problem, what is helping you deal with this?

Re: Breaking out like a teenager!

  • I use African Black Soap on a clarisonic and have for about a year. So far it is still working, only problem I am having now is extra dry skin this past week. I switched to a raw Shea butter cream as my face lotion because the flakes and cracking were so awful. I'm afraid it is going to make me break out but the dryness is also very uncomfortable (the cracks were stinging). It is a lot better today. I'm hoping that by continuing to use the black soap to wash it will keep away any breakouts while the Shea butter keeps me moisturized.

I haven't had any breakouts yet, but I know they're coming.

I struggled with acne throughout college and a couple years after. It was the painful, cystic type and I was miserable and depressed because of it. Then I decided to get a Mirena IUD and it miraculously went away! I had Mirena taken out last March and I've been waiting for the acne to return, but no sign of it yet.

I know with all these preggo hormones, it's only a matter of time, though. Also, I changed most of my skincare products when I found out I was KU because most of them have salicylic acid. Without that, I'm doomed, for sure.  :s

  • @LizaKate1213 , Oh!  I need to check out that African Black Soap!  I have a clarisonic too, that I use two-three times a week, and I love it.  It's just not helping much with these hormonal breakouts.

@CopperBoom86 , maybe you won't break out at all.  I've been reading confusing articles online about pregnancy and acne meds.  All of them say no to Salicylic and Benzoyl.... but some say yes to glycolic acid, while some say no.  I'm so confused.  I'm hoping the Belli Skincare (acne meds for pregnant ladies) works.

  • I switched from a salicylic acid based cleanser (Murad) to Makeup Artists Choice DMAE cleanser and it's helped immensely with my hormonal breakouts. My skin doesn't exfoliate itself well, so I use a Clarisonic Mia daily and a glycolic acid peel weekly to keep up.  And I treat myself to cheap sheet masks a few times a week for extra moisture and use CeraVe  moisturizer every night and spf 47 every day.  I underwent a year of painful IPL facials to get rid of my melasma from tanning+birth control pills, so I'm trying hard not to have it return with this pregnancy.
  • I broke out the first couple of weeks but now I noticed that my face is really clearing up (better than it has since I stopped BCP). I'm 7w 4d, so it might start to clear up soon as your body adjusts! On the other hand, my back still seems to be breaking out some. Hoping it goes away soon. I stopped using my salicylic acid wash when I got my BFP bc I read that they're not necessarily safe, so right now I'm just using old fashioned Ivory bar soap.

  • I've always battled off and on with acne since I was a teenager. With my first pregnancy the first trimester was awful. I was so broken out. So far this time, it's not too terrible except right around my jawline, which is weird because I never used to get acne there. I hope it starts to clear up quickly, because it's really annoying! The rest of my face looks pretty good though comparatively to previous pregnancy!

  • I can definitely commiserate!!! I have 4 pimples on one eyebrow alone and have never broken out to this extent in my life! I stopped using my night cream and it helped initially, but it didn't last long :(

I currently  use nothing, and have suffered  terribly. The chest acne and my chin are killing me. I have been trying to avoid putting anything on my face until  it clears up, which it always has in 2nd tri   for me.

Agreed!  I got my order on Friday and used it all weekend and today I'm 80% clearer than last week!  Thank heavens something works!!!
  • Oh I'm so excited to learn about Belli!  I just ordered the anti-blemish set.  My acne was so horrible when I was pregnant with my DS.  Thank you!

  • Okay this might sound super weird but trust me.  I've suffered from acne since I was a kid (not teenager but like a 5 year old). And it never went away, even as an adult.  I've tried everything from proactive to actutane and nothing lasted.

    Until I discovered coconut oil.

Okay I know - an oil + acne skin = disaster  but it actually worked! I rinse my face with warm water first, then dry, then get a small (and I mean small pea size amount) of oil and rub it in your hands then rub it all over your face.  Take a face cloth and get it nice and hot (as hot as you can take it), ring it out, then place it on your face.  While my face is covered, I apply a bit of pressure to the cloth to make sure it really opens up my pores, and once the cloth cools off (15 seconds or so) I remove it, and wipe areas that tend to feel a bit too oily (around my nose mainly).  You probably won't even have to pat dry because it will dry up almost instantly and it doesn't leave your face oily or dried out and by the next day your skin will look better.

I only do it once a day, usually at night, and just rinse my face with water in the morning.  I find the effects last that I can actually miss a day or two of the routine.

  • Just make sure your coconut oil is raw or virgin, meaning unprocessed.  It's a bit more expensive but considering how little you'll use, it will last.

  • Anyone else having tiny blisters on their face? It's not really full on pimples, just looks like little blisters in the chin area. I read someone a bar of dial soap helps with pregnancy acne. I've tried tea tree oil, coconut oil and the clarisonic. Nothing seems to be helping.

I might try this!  I already switched my body lotion to coconut oil.  I find it isn't oily or sticky at all, and love it.  Thanks for the tip.  I like the idea of wiping it off with a hot towel too.
  • Just make sure your coconut oil is raw or virgin, meaning unprocessed.  It's a bit more expensive but doesn't have the additives in it.  I used it last night on a pimple that was burning as it grew and today it's almost gone.
