How many weeks?

How many weeks were you/will you be when you had/have your A/S? For my first I was 18 weeks and my second I was 20. I am seeing the same doctor who delivered my second, but I didn't switch to her until I was 24 weeks along last time. When we talked about my A/S she insisted that it be at 22 weeks (I'll be 21+6) which I thought was odd. I'm not questioning it because I trust her and know she has been doing this for a long time. I'm more curious than anything when others have/will have theirs.

Re: How many weeks?

  • I voted 19-20 weeks but my scan was exactly at my 20 week (so I wasn't sure to go 19-20 or 20-21) this is the only a/s I will have unless they feel there is any issues later on.

  • I voted 19-20 because my scan was at 19+4 so I figured since it was halfway through week 19 I'd pick that option
  • I was at 20 weeks exactly too but my doctor would do it any time between 18 and 22 depending on when your "every 4 weeks" appointment fell.
  • My first appointment fell at exactly 9 weeks and every appointment is exactly 4 weeks apart (my new week starts onTuesday which works out because that is DHs day off, so our appts are always on a Tuesday). Therefore, my a/s was at exactly 21 weeks. Last pregnancy it was closer to 20 weeks. I don't know why this stupid app has me in a quote box....
  • I was 18+1. Just how it worked out scheduling wise. My last A/S was 19/20 though.
  • I didn't vote, because I was exactly 19 weeks the day I had mine. Sorry if that messes
    things up!!

  • We were in Iowa with my first pregnancy and I had my a/s at 21w6d. This time in GA, office policy was 20w or as close as possible. My weeks turn on Saturdays, so I was 20w2d.

  • I had two. One at 18+3 and one at 21+6. It won't allow me to vote twice.
  • My office doesn't start them until 20 weeks to be sure the baby has grown enough for those slow growers out there. I was a little over 20 weeks.
  • I am having two since baby was measuring a little large at the last one. First one at 20 weeks and second at 28 weeks.
  • Mine was 19+1
  • 17+6 because of the way scheduling worked out.
  • I voted 17-18 Since I was 17+4.. My Ob usually doesn't do it until between 18-20 but it landed right after Christmas and wanted DH to be able to go. It makes me wonder whether doing it early made them miss her clubbed foot.

  • Hey OP, what state do you live in? I had mine at 18 weeks 2 days, since my doctor's office prefers to do it 18-20 weeks. Which I think is when the majority have them based on your poll.

I ask your state, because I"m wondering whether it's a socially liberal or socially conservative state. I'm completely speculating here, but I would think a doctor would want your anatomy scan to be late enough where you'll be able to see everything that needs to be seen on the scan, but early enough where if there was a problem where you might have to make some difficult decisions, you would still have time to do that. 22 weeks seems to be pushing it. Not unheard of or anything, but to insist, seems a little strange.

At my 16 week OB appointment, I had my second trimester blood test, and my doctor said if that test came back abnormal, she would want the AS pushed up a week, so it was earlier than 18 weeks.

  • I was 18 weeks but baby was positioned so low and in a ball so she had me go again at 21 weeks because there wasn't much they could see.

  • @huskypuppy14 I'm in Oregon which is a liberal state, but I live in and my Ob is in a conservative County. Not that the county really matters though. I asked her about it twice and she said she always does them at 22 weeks. I didn't push because she has done other scans on me in her office and everything is looking to be fine so far. We also skipped the quad screening, but that was my choice.

I guess I could've been a little more clear. By 18-19 of meant anytime between 18-19 weeks. You voted exactly how I meant for it to be :)

I had my first two DDs in Oregon, and I think the A/S were done between 18 and 19 wks (it's been awhile though so I'm not 100% sure) We moved to Washington so this baby girl will be born over here and I have noticed a difference in how things are being done this time but I just attributed it to being at a different clinic/hospital. I have no idea about the liberal/conservative aspect of it, but that's an interesting thought.

Odd that she's so specific! my midwife just said I could book it anytime after 18 weeks
  • My office would not book before 20 weeks.
  • I had my first one at 20w3d then had a level 2 at 20w5d and I have to set up a 3rd one around week 23w. The first one the lady sucked and didn't really do a good job. The second one they were able to see a lot more they just couldn't get good pictures of the arms legs and hands because of the position of the baby. The later you do the exam the more they can see.
