What did you do about MMR?

What did you or will do you about the MMR vaccine?

I've read everything that I can get my hands on, including the Vaccine Book, and am really leaning towards delaying this vaccine by a few months.  My only hesitation is that we live in NYC aka germ central.  Ideally, I'd love to split it, but my doctor informed me that is no longer an option.  Now I'm really torn on how what to do.

How have you decided to handle it?

Re: What did you do about MMR?

  • Gave it at regular time with DD 1 and will again with DD 2.

  • gave it at his 12 month appointment.
  • We are doing it at 2 years.

ETA: The normal for our pedi is 18m-2yr, we also only do one shot at a time, so nothing else will be given when she gets the MMR.

  • DS got it at 18m.

other than not giving more than 2 shots at once- I would never consider altering the schedule for immunizations.  My Ped agrees.

  • 12 Month appt.

  • Got it at 12 month appt. on the regular recommended schedule.
  • We did it at 12mo which is what was recommended by DD's pedi.

  • We got his first dose at 12 months and his second dose at 18 months, so he is all done (a lot of pedis don't do the 2nd dose until kids are about to start Kindergarten). No reactions, although DS DID have a reaction ot his last DTaP vaccine.

We decided to do that because all pedis in our practice (plus our old pedi - we switched at a year) recommend getting the MMR in accordance with what the AAP recommends, barring any specific health issues in individual children. Nothing I read convinced me that my pedis or the AAP are wrong.

    this exactly.

only we DID it a few days ago lol

  • I'm also in NYC.  I had a huge discussion with my pedi about it.  I wanted to split the MMR but my pedi also said it wasn't an option because of the national backorder.  I thought about delaying it but I didn't want to put him at risk for getting any of those diseases- especially measles.

I did the 1st dose at 12 months.  I will wait until just before kindergarten for the 2nd dose but I will only give him the measles vaccine then.  There is no reason as far as I'm aware to give them the entire MMR dose the second time when they just need the measles dose.  Hopefully, by then they'll have it available to be split.

What pedi do you go to?

  • I had a very, very severe reaction to MMR when I was a kid and it's not something I am willing to risk with a young baby.  Regardless of my reaction, my doctor recommends holding off until age 2 - 3 for MMR.  He says a child's brain is more developed at that age and can better tolerate it then.  I know the autism link isn't proven and I don't neccessarily believe it, but our doctor's son has autism and he really urges parents to wait on the MMR and space out the rest of the vaccines, so we are following his direction.
  • DS got his at his 15 month appt. this past Monday.  Since you are in NYC, I would def. get it.  We take DS there all the time, and so we always make sure he's up to date on all his vaccines.  :)

  • We're waiting until closer to 3 and will get it split up...it is still available, you're ped probably just dosn't want to have to buy it that way since they have to buy it bulk.

  • Regular time - per pedi's recommendations.
  • It most certainly can still be split.  We gave it on time for our 3 older children.  Our youngest child we delayed it a bit only since we were going away immediately after he would have gotten it.  We're going to do it in February when we have to take him in for a weight check.  But, he has neurological conditions and has had seizures in the past.  We were worried about our guy spiking a fever which could lead to another seizure for him.  We wanted to be in our area when and if this would happen to be near his drs.

We talked to the nurse about delaying it before we talked to the dr about it and she said that we could still break it up.  The problem was that they had plenty of the measles vax but the maker of the vaccines said they couldn't give them a timeline when the rubella and mumps vaccines would be done.

  • gave it at his 12 month appointment.
  • She's getting hers Monday at her 12 mo apt (we delayed for insurance reasons and it'll be the day she turns 13 mos)

I teach kids with AU and none of their parents feel there is any link bt the vaccines and their children's AU.  (that's not the only reason I'm ok with giving it!)

  • 12 mo

Our physician is also a young mother and has done a good amount of research in regards to her children. She saw no reason to delay the shot since he didn't have reactions to the others. I really trust her because she also is my boss and is VERY earth mama so I know if she felt safe doing it for her kids than it would be fine for Jack.

  • 16 months.  We delayed it a couple months because of the flu shot and scheduling conflicts.

  • We chose not to do it at all. I would personally go to another doc who will split it for you. You always have an option. That's ridiculous for him to say that.
  • We did it at the regular time.  She had no reactions or side effects from it.
