Provera & Positive Pregnancy Test

Hi Ladies - I have taken Provera for several months to induce my cycles. On CD35, I will take two pregnancy test (always come back negative), then start the Provera. I always start my period within a day or two after finishing the provera. This month I took the 10 days of the Provera but my period still had not came after five days. I knew that it could take up to two weeks but I was feeling anxious so I took a pregnancy test. All five of them (with different urine throughout the day) came back positive. I will see the doctor on Monday but I'm worried about the birth defects/miscarriage since I took Provera while pregnant. Do any of you have a similar story or situation? Anybody have any knowledge on whether this is true or not?

Thanks!

Re: Provera & Positive Pregnancy Test

  • I don't know for sure but my guess is that it's too early in pregnancy to cause a birth defect. Women drink, smoke, do drugs etc before they test positive (and sometimes after) and babies end up being okay for the most part.

  • what @SarahFoley725 said. i was a big time partier before i became pregnant, & didnt find out until i was 6.5 weeks along. so for the first 6 weeks of my pregnancy, i was drinking & doing drugs. when i found out i was pregnant, i mentioned this to my doctor & he didn't seem the least bit concerned.

mention it to your doctor on Monday & see what they say. i too think it'll be too early in the pregnancy for this to affect thd baby, but it's definitely worth the mention. congratulations!
  • @therookie this post is somewhat old but I just came across it. I got pregnant with my first either while on or shortly before being on provera! Dr said it was totally safe and he's now a healthy almost 2 year old :)

  • This post is old so I hope you got your answers already, but wanted to share my story with anyone else who is concerned.

I took Provera to induce a period (Jan 15-25), and took a pregnancy test in preparation to call my doctor when I hadn't gotten my period by February 11th (18 days after finishing Provera).  The test was positive, so I went for blood work and confirmed my pregnancy.  When I spoke with the doctor and asked about any possible side effects from the Provera, he said that for a small number of women, Provera actually induces ovulation, which is why I ended up pregnant this cycle instead of with a period.    This was my first time on Provera; in the past I had always taken Prometrium to induce periods.

Yup, my doctor said the same thing! They actually said that they used to give Provera to induce ovulation back in the day. :)
