Re: woking moms, how long did/will you BF

  • I went back to work a week before DD was 4 months.  My first goal was 6 months, which will be three weeks from today.  So now my new goal is a year.

  • I bf for 9 months, and I went back to work after 2.5 months.  I pumped twice each day.  DD decided she was done at 9 months, so I pumped for another month to see if she would change her mind.  When she didn't I stopped.  I would definitely go for 6 months and see where you are.  Take it one step at a time-being a bfing working mom is a big job.
  • I went back to work when DS was 3 mo old and I plan to pump for one year. I plan to conitnue to nurse for close to 2 years since WHO reccomends breastfeeding for 2 years.

  • I went back to work when DD was 4.5 months and BF until she was a year.  Give yourself short term goals and see how it goes.  I had a goal initially to 6 mo, then 9 and then 1 yr and we made it!  After about 9 mo, I needed to supplement with formula during the day bu tyou just have to do what you need to do and can keep bfing what you can.
  • I went back to work 3 days/week when DD was 13 weeks old.  I pump (still!) 3x/day at work.  I've made it 11 months and at this point will continue pumping until at least a year.  I'm hoping to wean her from daytime feedings (me pumping at work!) once she's a year and continue BFing mornings/night for a little while after that.  I agree with the pp, set short term goals.  When I started I never thought I'd make it this long.  Now i'm so close, how could I give up?  Besides, who wants to wash all those bottles ;)
  • First goal was one year...we made it, then my next was two year..we made that one too!  I pumped at work until 15 months.

  • I kept setting new goals for myself...until I go back to work...until Christmas...Easter...summer...her Bday.  And now I'm thinking until I'm ready to get pg again.
  • I went back to work at 6 weeks.  I pump during the day and BF when we're at home.  My first goal is 6 mos, but I'd love to make it a year.
  • I went back to work when DD was 3 months.  I pumped at work 2x a day and nursed her on my lunch hour until DD was 12 months.  I continued to nurse her on my lunch hour until about 17 months.  My initial goal was 1 year, which became 2 years at some point (maybe around 6 months).  Then I read about child led weaning, so I'm going to let DD decide when she's done.

  • 6 months was my original goal, but I changed it to a year.  I will definitely attempt to make it that long pumping and BFing.  After a year I won't pump anymore, but not sure about BFing at home with DD.

  • With DD1, I worked.  I pumped at work until she was 9 mo, then BF for another 6 weeks.  I had frozen BM to last her until a year.
  • I returned to work 4 days after her 4-month birthday. I pumped at work until 11 months, then weaned off the pump (she got frozen milk during the day until she was about 12.5 months) but continued nursing. We're still nursing AM/PM -- she'll be 19 months old next week.

My long-term goal was always to pump to 12 months, but I set mini-goals along the way. It was too overwhelming otherwise.

The Working Moms board is a fantastic place to get support with working/pumping. A lot of the women on there are current or former pumpers.
