I think the daycare is over feeding my son

So I will talk to them about this but I wonder if I am just not adding up correctly or if he really is over fed. So in my 9 hour work day I pump 3 times and get 4oz each time combined. He is at daycare for 8 hours. According to the daycare he will eat 16oz each day. They originally told me they will feed him on demand but now they have him on a schedule and shove a bottle at him every two hours. On on days when he stays at home with me, he is ebf but will only empty one boob each feeding.

The pediatrician basically told me they they over feed him by giving him 4oz at a time but looking on here it seems to be a common amount.

I am am just worried that they are trying to get him to eat as much as the older babies (he's the youngest) and that they are stretching his stomach out.

Re: I think the daycare is over feeding my son

  • Seems like a lot to me but every baby is different. I think normal amount is 2-5oz for breast fed babies. My daughter will only take 2 at a time but does eat every two hours. Maybe if he takes 4oz they could try to only feed him every 3 hours? My son when he was breast fed didn't start taking 4 until he was closer to 6 months and by a year he still never took more than 6 oz at a time. Also are they pace feeding? If not he may be taking it to fast and not getting the chance to feel full.

  • They don't pace feed and when I tried to give him smaller bottles they called me and said I needed to bring more. Also they feed him every 2 hours. So that's 4oz every two hours.
  • My kid was born at 10.5 pounds and took 4 ounces at our visit with the lactation consultant when she was 10 days old. Now at 6 weeks old she still takes the same amount from the bottle, but will take more if she is breastfeeding, (based on what I can pump out of both breasts). From what I understand it is based more on weight than on age. If it were me I would trust the opinion of the pediatrician, as well as your mom instincts. You know your kid better than daycare does.
  • When I pump I get about 6-8 ounces and when I offer the bottle my 8 week old DS takes about 3-4 ounces and then wants to eat again about 2 hours later. He's never as full from the bottle than he is from the breast so I know he drinks more when he breast feeds than the 3-4 ounces he will drink from the bottle. He's been taking 3-4 ounces since he was 4 weeks. like every one is saying every baby is different. Maybe ask the daycare to give him less at a time and offer a pacifier if he is still showing hunger signs before offering more milk.
  • If he's eating that much then maybe he needs it. I wouldn't worry about "overfeeding" a baby.
  • DS can eat 13 ounces of breastmilk between 9pm and 1am   but that's usual for him. Doesn't seem usual for your babe, I think they're trying to put him on a schedule rather than feeding on demand so I'd ask about that

I went away for a few hours and my SO fed the baby 3oz of breast milk and when I came home he was still acting like he was starving. When I'm engorged, I can pump 5oz in 15min easily and still have enough milk for him to eat. It's hard to know what our babies are eating unless they're only bottle fed. I'm preparing to go back to work in two weeks and want to make sure I have at least 25oz a day for my LO. Better to be safe than sorry.
  • I was told by another mom @ my daycare they will try to put him on a schedule and that daycare wastes a lot of milk, so I was prepared to send extra bottles. If your son is taking the milk and not spitting it up then he may need it or they may making 4oz bottles and throwing some out because he isn't finishing it (which they aren't going to tell you, because who wants to tell a pumping Mommy that her milk is being wasted).

This is what I think is happening. I didn't mention that at almost 11 weeks he is only 11lbs.
  • I agree about asking what they are wasting. Daycare should treat breast milk like gold but they don't. Also you could try bottle feeding for one day to see what he takes for yourself.
  • Lurker from feb here.
If you are exclusively BF, They are giving too much milk. The general rule is 1-1.5 oz of milk for every hour you are away from baby. So if you are gone 8 hrs, baby should only get 8-12 oz.

i I would print this and talk to them about paced bottle feeding again.

  • I would argue that you should be concerned. Yes some babies eat 4 oz in a feeding, but I wouldn't assume that and baby's tummy could be stretching from over eating. I would tell them to give less (maybe 2.5 oz bottles) and leave an extra ounce if they absolutely need it.
  • He doesn't go back until Friday so I will make smaller bottles and provide them with 1oz frozen bags for extra and talk to them about feeding.
  • Just wanted to say that I spoke too soon, my mom had DS and texted me today that Jackson took 7 oz after his AM nap (after I BF @ 6am he usually falls back to sleep for 2 hours). 7 oz...he is 8 weeks old! The next feeding he only took his usual 5. I'm going to mention it to the pediatrician when we go for his 2 month tomorrow.
  • My 11 week old regularly eats 5 oz. of pumped milk, and we're about to let him try 6 oz. He eats every 2 1/2 to 3 hours during the day.
  • DS was taking 5-6 oz of pumped milk every 3 hrs.  But that was only about once a week so it didn't worry me too much.  Now that I'm back to working 15 hrs a week (3 afternoons) I was worried so I switched him to a preemie nipple for his avent naturals bottle.   It slowed him down to only taking 2 oz every 2 hrs.  The kelly mom website said that is in the lower end of normal for a BF baby to eat.  I'm able to keep up with that amount pumping much easier.  Could you switch him to a preemie nipple at daycare?  You could also try making 2-3 oz bottles but just a couple more just in case?  I leave a 3 oz bottle for every 3 hrs knowing DS probably won't finish the last ounce.

@kksquared he goes back tomorrow and I plan on doing just that. I use the medela bottles while he is at daycare because they have lost other bottles and nipples already so I will make them in 2.5-3 oz but I will pack extra. If they are going to have him on a schedule it will be easier on all of us if I work around them.
thanks for all your answers guys

@atolentino89 That's terrible that they are losing your bottles and nipples.  Those get expensive after time!  You could also print out the Kelly mom article with the number of times he eats calculated in it so they could see it.

  • I'm frustrated for you @ATolentino89 that you have to accommodate them and not the other way around.

Yuuuuup. But unfortunately they are the only daycare in my area that provides 3 days a week instead of forcing me to pay for 5. If we had all of our ducks in a row before DS things would be wayyy different. But since he was a surprise we are dealing with it the best we can.
