Infertility

Introduction - and some questions

I have been lurking, moved from lurking the TTC board to here, and just got my 1 year anniversary badge from the bump, so I figured it was time to make an introduction.

DH (37) and I (26) have been TTC for about 15 months. Since the beginning of the year we have gotten serious about testing and diagnosis. I have kind of long periods (30-45 days), but I ovulate 9/10 of those; I also had HSG and results were good. DH had a SA and results weren't great. We had our first meeting with the urologist and he said DH has a varicocele and will need to have a varicocelectomy. His TMSC is 8M based on his most recent SA. DH was really disappointed, because the doctor told us that IUI wasn't recommended unless they could get TMSC above 10M, or in DHs head, I think that he heard 'IVF is the only option at this point and its my fault'. I felt better than I have in a year, knowing what the problem is and having a path to improve the conditions and maybe even achieve pregnancy naturally post-op. I am probably overly optimistic there, but I am the type of person that is comforted by information so having a diagnosis is pretty fantastic in my opinion.

Questions - does anyone have experience with this surgery? The doctor said it is similar to a hernia surgery, but DH hasn't had any surgery requiring anesthetic so I want to ease his mind about it if possible.

Has anyone ever seen some resource online that depicts probability of success with different methods (natural, IUI) based on TMSC (I am picturing a chart or something similar)? I am not sure if I am being overly optimistic, or overly negative, or if I just need to shut up and wait a few months until the results from the surgery can be determined.

Also, feel free to rage at me if I didn't do well on the etiquette front.... I tried my hardest, but I also have thick skin and can handle the truth :)

  • Hi and welcome!
Think you did brilliant on the etiquette front and love your enthusiasm/positivity!
    Definitely don't loose them :)

I can relate to the 'we've got a diagnosis and a plan, so things look brighter'. I find that gives me a hold on, and a way to get to a solution.

No advice/tips/knowledge about male infertility, just wanted to wish you welcome :)

  • Hello and welcome @kln62689!  I'm not familiar with that surgery, but I certainly understand the struggles of male factor infertility.  My RE recommends trying IUI first in many MFI cases, as he says he sees success with TMSC 1M+.  I have known ladies on these forums who became pregnant from IUI with between 4-7M post wash, so it is possible!  We have yet to be successful.  Just had our 2nd IUI with 9M post wash.  Hoping for the best!!!  Best of luck to you :)
