UPDATE: Slow Heart Rate

edited March 2016 in October 2016 Moms

Good Morning my fellow October Mamas,

So I just received my ultrasound results through my online portal that I have through my doctors office. My doctor sent me super early because I was unsure about how far along I am. As expected I am about 6 wks 5 days today and I was 5 wks 6 days at the time of the ultrasound. However, at the bottom of the sheet it said that the heart rate was only 77 BPM. it did state that it was difficult to capture between the baby being so small and my breathing on top of it. Is this something I should be concerned about? Of course no mother wants to hear that their baby has a slow heart rate. I guess I'm just looking for a little bit of comfort from other mothers that may have gone through something similar in the beginning.

P.S. I will be calling my doctor today to get a better explanation. Hoping for good news :)

UPDATE: Last night I went for my follow up ultrasound and everything was GREAT! Baby is growing and heart rate was 175! I am so relieved :) Thanks for all the kind words and reassurance

Re: UPDATE: Slow Heart Rate

  • I don't know much on the topic, but I think it was on the early side for seeing a heartbeat so I don't know if it really was slow for being only 5 weeks 6 days. I think that early the heartbeat tends to be irregular and doesn't really regulate until into the 6th week. Hope it's just that and the dr gives you some reassurance!

  • I don't know much about it but my first pregnancy I had an US at 6w 4d and the heart rate was only 103.

That is quite early. It is very possible that the heart had just started beating and a day earlier you would have seen nothing. I wouldn't be concerned since it was such an early u/s. Most places won't do them until after 6 weeks for this reason, there isn't much if any real baby to see.

  • Super early hb like that are irregular and tend to be slow. Another 2 weeks and baby should be right up there at normal.

  • UPDATE: Thank you so much for all of the advice and reassuring words. I spoke to my doctor's office yesterday and just like you all said she thought it was a bit too early for a true heartbeat read so I am going back in two weeks! Hopefully this time I'll have a much better outcome :)

I had an emergency ultrasound yesterday due to spotting and was also 5w6d. Our tech was able to capture a "high" of 106.. but as the previous poster said, the heartbeat varied in numbers. Perhaps they caught yours on a "low" end. It took a while for our ultrasound tech to find the 106. Hope this helps calm your nerves!
