hair literally falling out

I'm just about 4 months postpartum and im noticing in the last month that my hair is falling out in much much larger quantity than normal. now i had a ton of thick hair before being pregnant and it got thicker/grew more while i was pregnant. Could this just be me shedding the extra that i grew while on prenatal vitamins? is this happening to anyone else? or should i maybe be worried and see a doctor?

Re: hair literally falling out

  • It's normal to lose your hair because of the shift in hormones. Mine lasted about two months and is finally starting to slow down. Don't worry, all the hair grows back.

  • Mine is doing the same thing. Typically it happens because during pregnancy you don't shed nearly as much as normal so after pregnancy what you would have shed during finally comes out. 9 months of no shedding leads to lots of lost hair at once. I had very thing hair before and it was so nice during. It's going back to thinner now and it makes me sad lol
  • Mine is finally starting to stop.  I had handfuls at a time.  Ugh hair everywhere!  It was so annoying!  Totally normal though.
  • my hair covers anything i touch or even walks by it seems. soo annoying! but my mom had 4 kids in 5 years (age range 3-8) and she told me it happened with every single one of them so that made me feel a lot more relieved! (except i wish there was a miracle stop because my mini yanks out handfuls of hair at a time)
  • phew! lol yes, it comes out in the shower in handfuls! and its everywhere, i'm constantly pulling hair from my sons hand. hopefully it wont last too much longer.

I am going through this as well and can't stand it! It started a few weeks ago, my baby is 4 months old.  My hair is thin to begin with, so seeing the clumps and strands fall out, all the time, is very concerning.  I hear there's not much you can do and it can last for several months unfortunately.  I can definitely see major thinning by my hairline, ugh.
  • I'm about to cut my hair short because the long hair falling off everywhere is soooo annoying! Plus I keep worrying about it wrapping around LOs fingers or toes.

This. I cut mine last week because of this exact post.

Ditto. I cut over 6 inches off last week. It makes the wads that come out less depressing since its not so long now. Plus-TMI I had a pilonidal cyst(don't google it) removed a few years ago and I seriously am terrified it could happen again because there is so much hair EVERYWHERE!!!

Ugh, same here. I lost a lot with DD in 2011 but it's worse since DS. It'll be 5mths Mar 3 and the hairloss by my temples is fierce. I used to have nice, thick wavy hair, but recently it's stringy and lackluster. Damn hormones. My mom said she experienced the same thing after my brother but the hair eventually grows back. So, there's hope. However, in the interim, I'm going to get my haircut super short but longer in the front to hide the hairloss at the temple, something like this:

  • Anyone have luck with vitamins or supplements to spur quicker regrowth or less hair loss?
My loss is in the temple area as well and it looks awful!
  • I've been just taking my normal prenatals vitamins with the folic acid because I'm BFing, but it hasn't improved. My mom said it took almost a year for it to go back to normal. Not looking forward to that. But I need it cut. It's super noticeable when I pull my hair back into a ponytail  :/
