Verifi accuracy in predicting gender

Hi There!

I recently did the Verifi blood test to assess the risk for any genetic birth defects. All came normal (thank goodness!), and they also predicted that I'm having a girl! I'm 13 week and it's a little too soon to see the gender on the ultrasound. I was just wondering if anyone else had done the Verifi tests, and whether it was accurate in predicting gender. We would be thrilled with a boy or girl, just wondering if it's safe to start sharing the news!

I'm not fully educated about the Verify tesy, however I think the blood tests are always accurate in predicting gender, because it looks at the DNA.

I'm pretty sure they are actually looking at the genetic code... That's even more accurate to tell sex than eyeballing it.

Thanks everyone! I read on another thread that the blood screens were sometimes wrong in predicting girls because somehow the test was picking up mom's dna? I was curious if anyone has had that experience. I also read on another thread that if you've been pregnant with a boy the test can actually pick up dna from that previous pregnancy which can throw off the results and indicate a boy for the current pregnancy. I should probably stop confusing myself and just trust the results. LOL!

I believe the blood test is much more accurate than the ultrasound. The blood test is looking at fetal DNA. I don't think mom's DNA would get mixed in there, but perhaps (I don't understand a lot about how genetic testing works). I know for a fact the ultrasound can be wrong though. I've seen it happen in practice where I work and I've also known people (three couples to be exact) that it has happened to. With ultrasound they are more likely to tell you that you're having a girl when it's really a boy, especially if the ultrasound is done before 20 weeks.

It's my understanding when they do the genetic test they are also looking for sex specific gender abnormalities. So if they find a "y" chromosome in there it shows your having a boy... no y then a girl. It doesn't really have anything to do with your dna because women don't carry they y.... she told me the only time it could be inaccurate is if you've had a miscarriage recently and there may still be the previous babies chromosomes left.

^ this. I was told by my OB-GYN that it's 99.9% accurate (there's that .01% for the cases like @ashleybonham mentioned).

I just met with our genetic counselor yesterday and had he verfi done. She explained if it says boy then it's 99.4% accurate but if it was a girl it was 98% because there's a chance in the small amount of blood collected they might have missed the Y chromosome. But it's such a high percent. After our ultrasound the dr came in and explained in the last month they have had both false reported so they recommended waiting until after the a/s scan to announce. Which I was surprised at I always heard they were very accurate and honestly at 98 & 99.4% it seems very accurate
