Initially I was using the hand pump which worked fine it was the Medela brand that I got when I left the hospital however when I switched to the Electric pump that I got from the WIC office I notice that it's much faster I was able to get express milk within 15 minutes vs. The time that I spent doing it with the manual and my hands didnt cramp up from pumping if you just wanted something you can travel with that's discreet the manual pump could be your best bet however they do sell electric pumps that are about the same size as the manual ones I had one from Nuk I got it from Target and it runs off of batteries or you can plug it into the wall that option may be better so you don't spend your entire break pumping and tiring your hand out so browse the portable electric ones and see how you like those if you don't like it you can always return them until you find one that you like
I have the avent manual pump that pumps into the naturals bottles we use. I bought it at first for convenience and less expensive. I use it on occasion and keep it in the car in case I forget my pump parts or my pump malfunctions. I've also used it to pump in the car and then give DS the milk I just pumped if we are on a long drive. I ended up buying an electric double pump (medela pump in style advanced) that came with a bag for work because the manual takes too long (10-15 minutes each side and my pump breaks are only 15 minutes). The avent manual pump is also less comfortable since you can't buy different sizes flanges. ive also noticed I get less when I use the manual and my supply decreases a little if I use it more than one pumping in a row compared to my electric. Overall it's okay for emergencies but I wouldn't suggest it for use all the time.
I have the medela manual pump and I love it. I also have a Hygia electric pump which I don't like. I was getting about 3-4 ounces total from the electric pump and I get 6-8 ounces from the manual pump! It doesn't take any longer for me I usually get the 6-8 ounces in 15 minutes and then clean up is super easy. I also like it because it's easy to just throw in the diaper bag and use when I'm out longer that a few hours without baby or if we are somewhere I don't feel comfortable breast feeding DH will give LO a bottle while I go to the restroom for 15 minutes and pump. I don't know if the Hygia electric pump just sucks but I prefer the manual pump for sure and it was only $40 also it's compatible with the dr Browns bottles I use (the Hygia pump was not)
I got an electric pump through insurance and thought it was okay. I just didn't like the fact I couldn't really travel with it so I went and got a Manuel Medela pump from target and I looooove it! Easy to clean, I can pump on the bed or take it with me. I think I get more out too. I find it fun lol.
I use the manual medela pump for night pumping and its really awesome. My DS feeds from one side each feeding at night, so I only need to pump one side. I also take it with me if I travel, as I have enough to carry with DS and his gear, I don't want to lug around the electric medela advanced that I have. Quick to clean and extremely light to carry!
I have the spectra double electric for my normal pump but I have the avent natural manual I use for long days out and about. I actually get great output and find the manual comfortable both my breast and hand. I do have a fast letdown though...so I pump pretty fast. I do massage more with the manual and had to play with tempo I use to pump to get the best results. I don't know how durabable manuals are for heavy use, I use my electric 14-21+ times per week on both sides, I use the manual 4-8 times per week.
