Fish Oil?

Today someone reccommended that I should be taking fish oil pills (omega 3) in addition to my PNV. I feel like I've read varying opinions on whether or not the fish oil pills are as effective as eating fish and also whether or not they are necessary.

Others opinions? Do you take fish oil pills? Do you even worry about omega 3? Do you just eat some oily fish now and again?

I am just going to try an eat salmon once or twice per week but my PNV has DHA in it, so I'm not too concerned.

  • I don't like fish, but I do take an algae derived DHA supplement daily.  I saw a documentary on PBS about fish oil pills and there being potential issues with mercury levels as the OTC version aren't regulated by the FDA, and also something about the fish oil breaking down from oxidation and becoming unhealthy (the link for anyone who cares to read it).
  • I think my PNV has DHA in it too. I didn't take a separate fish oil pill with DS either.

  • I take a separate fish oil pill. I don't think my PNV has DHA in it. I take the CVS brand labeled "mercury safe". My OB knows I take it and didn't question it. I only take one pill, which I think it's only 500mg. Usually they tell you to take 1000mg per day, but I read a few studies that brought into question if high doses were healthy, which made me go with a more moderate dosage.

  • My RE actually told me NO DHA. But I think that's because I'm on a blood thinner.
