Tummy Time Question

So my DS has decided that he hates tummy time so much he just rolls over when we put him on his stomach. Is it now pointless to do tummy time or should I still be trying to get him on his tummy? It's pretty instant that he rolls over now that he figured it out.

My DS rolled 7 times in a day during tummy time but has rolled less frequently since, its now been a couple days since a full front to back roll. Have you tried a prop? A rolled burp cloth or hand towel under his armpits might be just enough that he can't roll. Some baby gyms come with mini boppy looking pillows (kind of like a travel neck pillow), I'm not sure if they sell them seperately. I think they are supposed to continue tummy time because that is how the build muscles to crawl. I've done the burp cloth or I just put him back on his tummy until its been long enough.

  • We do tummy time on a boppy and DD loves it!
  • My son HATES tummy time! The only place I can get him to do tummy time is on his changing pad..

I'm going to try this. Olive either screams herself sick or she falls asleep and snores.
  • I would still do tummy time to strengthen muscles.

  • You can also put them on your knees. Obviously with your support, your LO won't roll over.
  • You could try tummy to tummy time. It might be more entertaining. But I would definitely do it!
  • I'm not 100% sure, but I think that carrying them around upright helps to develop their neck muscles as well.

DS2 has only done tummy time once or twice due to a very messy house (no time to clean!) and a big brother that is likely to jump on him if I put him down! DS1 didn't do tummy time a lot either, but I carried him around upright all the time. It didn't seem to slow down his development at all, as he was sitting around 3-4 months, pulled to stand for the first time at 6 months exactly, and was walking 3 months later!

I hear ya! +1 to this! DD hardly does tummy time for the same reasons. The other day I put her on her tummy and she almost rolled over at 7 weeks. So I don't think she has suffered from it! I do hold her upright a lot and put her across my lap on her tummy when she has tummy troubles.
  • @soccsm13 we baby wear too and he was 7 weeks when he rolled all the way over, repeatedly (but at 8.5 weeks he seems to have forgotten he can roll over). My understanding is wearing and tummy to your tummy both count.
  • At our 2-month check up this week the pediatrician said DD had wonderful head control. I told her that I do tummy time but not a ton since DD hates it, but that I wear her and carry and sit her upright a lot, and she said that all helps strengthen their necks and it all counts towards tummy time.

@TomekiaB Babies often "forget" skills they have mastered while they are working on mastering the next one. I bet he'll have a new trick to show you pretty soon!

  • I agree with what others have said about a prop or to do it face to face. Sometimes I will lay on the bed and have him propped up on the boppy or/and a firm pillow.

  • DD hates tummy time so I don't have her do it very often. She loves looking up at the curtains and curtain rod behind the couch while being burped. She even bobs her head lol. I think this has helped strengthen her neck more than play mat tummy time would have.
