Gag Reflex

Jane is always gagging herself. I don't know if it has to do with her tiny mouth or her reflux or if babies just gag easily. She often goes for the bottle or the paci too hard and then starts choking and gagging. Last night, we were doing her bedtime feed. When she finished eating, she was drowsy and started sucking on her middle and ring fingers. Then she smiled and it caused her to gag. When she gagged, her fingers went even further into her mouth, and when she gagged a second time, she threw up. I pulled her hand out of her mouth, but she ended up vomiting four times in a row. Poor dear.

Does anyone else have a baby with a strong gag reflex? I find I have to be really careful when I offer things to her mouth. Any advice on how to avoid it better?

Re: Gag Reflex

  • G always acts like she is gagging on a pacifier and her fingers. I just watch her and pull her hand out if she starts gagging. I think it happened with her hand/fingers because our babies are still uncoordinated

  • Baby's gag reflex is higher in the throat than an adults, as they get older it moves down.  The high gag reflex actual protects them from choking when starting solids, but it does make it much easier for them to gag.
DS gagged regularly when we did BLW.  It never seemed to bother him, but it looks scary.

  • YES! LO used to choke/gag at least once a day, if not multiple times. Most often it would be when first taking the bottle or pacifier, but on occasion, he would just start gagging on his own saliva while just sitting or lying around. He will be 14 weeks tomorrow, and I can say it has gotten better--it's not gone, but less frequent.
  • The gag reflex is like protection for babies. It's high to keep them from putting stuff in their mouths.
Wait til they start food! Lots of gagging. And it's totally normal.
  • Okay, thanks y'all. Glad it's normal. :-)
  • Rhys will sit there and gag after he eats, even with nothing in his mouth.  I feel like its a Russian roulette of whether he'll actually have any come out or not!
