Birth control

I have my 6 week check up next Monday and I am thinking I'm going to ask my OB to insert the IUD Skyla. Anyone have this or have had this and like it/don't like it? Side effects? It's only 3 years instead of 5 like Mirena and it's a Lower dose of medicine. What methods are you guys using? Sorry if this is a thread I searched back a few pages and didn't see anything.

Re: Birth control

  • I'm on jolivette, it's a low progestin (sp?) pill because I'm breastfeeding. My birth mom actually had an IUD put in her arm and ended up as that one woman in 100,000 or whatever it is to get pregnant! She was 16.

  • I had the ParaGuard put in last week.  No hormones at all.  Good for ten years.  Didn't even feel it when it was inserted (but this is after three kids).  No cramping.  Had some on again/off again bleeding for four days.  Otherwise I don't even know it's there.

I went back on an Nexplanon at my 6 week appointment, which is inserted into the inner upper arm.  It lasts for 5 years, though I'll probably have it taken out in a year and a half or so.

  • I'm having Mirena put in on Thursday. I would love to hear from anyone who has it.
OP I chose it over skyla because we don't think we want anymore children and are unlikely to change our minds within 3 years. They wouldn't do it at my 6 week appointment though, I had to make a follow-up because it needed to be ordered.
  • I had Mirena put in 2 weeks ago at 4 weeks pp (my doctor said it was fine, I thought I'd have to come back to get it later). I had about an hour's worth of slight cramping. I took the last 4 800 mg ibuprofen I had left from post labor prescriptions - not in one sitting, but as 4 doses. I had some spotting after, but I don't know if that's from Mirena or the fact that I haven't stopped spotting since birth. I can't feel a thing, and hopefully soon we'll find out if hubby will get poked by the string! My doctor used an ultrasound to place it. That really helped me feel confident about everything. And no supply issues in breast milk.

Mine wouldn't offer skyla because it's generally for women who haven't had children according to the manufacturer. Obviously having researched it, that's only because of the testing that's been done but either way my OB only offers mirena and paragard to women who have had children.
I had mirena inserted four days after my 6 week appointment. I didn't feel a thing and he some minor cramping and spotting afterward.

ETA I also don't feel Pap smears so I have like the opposite of a sensitive cervix.
  • I just went on the pill... Mostly because I don't want to have to have it taken out in a year when we try for #2, but also because I worked for a catholic hospital and they don't cover it on their insurance plan o:)
  • I had an iud placed a few years back but bc I had cysts (unknown to me) it was really painful & had to be removed. This time around it's the mini pill for me & then Essure in 5 months (bc we're done having children).
also maybe tmi but due to my super narrow lady parts my dr is going to completely knock me out for this procedure & she was surprised they got the iud in at all.
    Good luck whatever you decide!
  • Will my OB be pushing a birth control at my appt? I'm not sure I want to go on anything.  I had a hard time getting my body regulated after coming off the pill to get pregnant with this LO.  We plan on trying again soon and I'm currently EBF
  • @mperotti220 My OB certainly didn't push it. She gave me my options, then added that just using condoms is cool, too. She did stress the importance of not getting pregnant within a year of my c section,  but she wasn't aggressive.

    I'm going with Mirena.

I got the Mirena placed 7weeks pp and for me it hurt getting placed. My dr had anticipated this and actually gave me a pain killer shot in my hip 15 min before hand which hurt, then I also got my second HPV shot which hurt so maybe I was just grumpy about those but when she used the dialator to open my cervix enough to place it is what hurt the most. I was dizzy and lightheaded for about 10 minutes after they put it in (totally normal so bring water) and I got my period so I'm not sure exactly how long the spotting lasted. So far so good.
  • My OB also advised me against Skyla because she said it was created for people who have not had children it's much smaller and designed for women with smaller uterus - mostly designed for teenagers. I went ahead with the mirena but I go back in 2 weeks for the procedure.
  • I wasn't pushed into BC. She advised against a pregnancy within a year because of the cesarian and end stage pregnancy complications. She briefly went over barrier methods as she knew I didn't want an IUD or anything hormonal. That probably took about two minutes.
  • My ob was/is a total b@$#%! I asked for jolivet and she wouldn't give it to me. I have tri nessa (pills) and it says on the packaging not to take it if you are breastfeeding, which I complained to her about because I had told her I wanted something that would not interfere with that but she insisted that jolivet isn't as effective and that the tri nessa wouldn't effect my supply because it had already "been established". So I decided to take them anyway and I think they did lower my supply :( pretty sure either that or something is wrong with my pump. Lately I have been wishing I could just get my tubes tied but I have always heard you have to have at least 2 kids for that.
  • You might want to see a different OB - anything with estrogen (trinessa) *can* lower your supply. You should be on the mini pill like jolivette (progestin only) if you're going to take pills. @BrookeBrown2015
  • @BrookeBrown2015 you can absolutely have your tubes tied if you're sure you're all done, it's your body. Same as the mini pill vs a full- you choose what works for you. Just call & have it switched. My ob said the same about "once supply is established" but I said I'd do the mini pill anyway bc it's worked for me in the past.
  • I am on the pill. Never had problems with it before and had no trouble getting pregnant when I stopped so I just figured I would go back on it.

You cannot have an IUD placed in your arm. It is an intrauterine device which goes in your uterus.

  • My OB told me about a new IUD called Liletta. It's for three years although they're trying to get it passed for seven years. The office is going to call me when they have info on costs for it versus Mirena through my insurance. Both should be no cost per Affordable Care Act, so we'll see.

  • I take the fill pill and I am breastfeeding. It's not that you *shouldn't* take it, but that you should be aware of the risk to your supply if you do. My dr said there were no increased medical risks or anything, just a risk to your supply. I have been taking it a month and have seen no difference, so for some women it is probably fine.
  • Am I the only one that had bad cramping for hours after the Mirena was placed and bleeding  (not spotting) for almost 48 hours now. Both are possible side effects, but guess uncommon?
  • I only had very slight cramping, but I took 800 mg of ibuprofen when I got home. My OB told me that taking 800 mg of ibuprofen would slow the bleeding, but I didn't bleed per se. I've had bright red blood since about 3 weeks pp. and it hasn't gone away since Mirena, in fact I would say it was period like after Mirena for a few days. You could try the ibuprofen though and see what happens.

I had a lot of spotting after and the a couple days later got a period. My OB said I could have irregular bleeding for the first 2-3 months.
I had minor cramping but like I said before I pretty much have no feeling in my cervix so that might have something to do with it.
  • Oh, For crap sakes!!! I've already missed taking a damn pill... Ugh! I just noticed this. I didn't start them at the right time either (I went out of town and forgot them so I couldn't start on day 1 of my period). And of course DH has been without for so long that he can't stay off me lately. I want my kids close in age, but not 11 months apart! Eek!
  • Thanks for all the comments everyone! I go in then morning so will update on what I decide.
  • I decided to go ahead with the skyla but he won't put it in for another month! He said he wants my uterus all the way healed up first.

This is exactly why I got the IUD. I can barely remember to take my prenatal everyday.
  • My doctor said since I'm ebf and want more children (probably start trying in a year) the barrier method was fine. She just stressed not to get pregnant in the next six months because I had a c-section and the next baby will be c-section too. (I have pelvic issues)
  • I just came back from getting the mirena in. I'm having some cramping but not too bad. I've never had it before so I'm a little nervous after reading some of the horror stories and side effects, but I think I'll be fine. We're done having children and I didn't want to have to stress myself out trying to remember to take my pill everyday . I was never good at that.
  • Does anyone have any experience with the nexplanon? I know everyone is different. A friend said her periods last 2 weeks. Two whole weeks. There's no way I can remember to take a pill everyday and an IUD is out of the question. I'm 8w PP and have yet to be seen by a doc. My checkup isn't scheduled until 11w PP. I'm going crazy over here!!
  • I had the Paragard inserted last week. It was very uncomfortable but nothing painful at all. Minimal cramping afterwards. I had my period during insertion so I can't say much about spotting or bleeding. It's been a week now with no spotting, bleeding, or cramping. We'll see how periods goes moving forward.

  • @ammnam14 most of the birth controls that have been discussed (aside from paragard) are progesterone only. The IUD is, the implenon, norplant, most others including nexplanon. Progesterone is the hormone that keeps you from menstruating while pregnant; however, I had been on an oral progestin only bc  for years prior to getting pregnant and it's just very hit or miss. Most women end up not having a period after a while. I would go two weeks where I'd bleed and then not again for 3 months and that's all normal. When I took the depo shot, which I only did once, I bled for a couple weeks and then didn't for the rest of the 3 months so while you do have abnormal bleeding, most women eventually don't bleed at all.
  • I got the be planing implanted on Monday. I had it before we started trying and I found it easy and not painful. I hadn't started my period yet since I'm breastfeeding and I never had one the last time I had it. I have a bad bruise on my arm and it was a little tender after the lidocaine wore off but other than that I don't even know it's there. I can only take progesterone birth controls due to my clotting disorder so I have limited choices and this one is the best for me.
