Registry

Hi mamas. I've been out of the loop for a few days. Was down in Miami with my girlfriends soaking up some vitamin D. Thank God I didn't see one mosquito!

For or those of you that will be registering...when will you start and where? We are thinking of baby list and buy buy baby.

We we will be team green so hopefully we can find everything we need/want.

I feel like there is so much pressure for a baby registry. Although, don't get me wrong I am super excited ;)

Re: Registry

  • We'll probably register at Target, because most of folks I know will likely shop there anyway, and possibly buy buy baby if there are things we want to purchase on our own. We only have one buy buy baby in our area and it's not really in a convenient location for most folks I know!

We'll likely register sometime in the second trimester, but I suppose it really all depends on when/if there is a shower!

  • I agree with @JennM205 . We registered at 20 weeks right after the a/s with DD. We had to go back in and add/change stuff right before my shower at 32 weeks.

I'm registering again for this one, but no one but DH and I (and you lovely ladies) will know. I'm doing it for the completion discounts and free goodies the store gives. I'm planning on registering at BRU and Target. BRU has a good reward program with getting a certain (small) percentage of what was bought off your registry back as a gift card. And I just love Target, and they give a decent completion discount.

  • I agree with @JennM205. Totally cool to research the big stuff now, but I'd wait on actually registering until later in the 2nd tri.

FWIW, we were team green and got awesome gender neutral stuff so don't worry about that.

  • I'm not registering but I wanted to add something about registering at Target.  Now, I love Target (and go there weekly) but I'm not a fan of registering there.  I've created one for myself for the completion discount and coupons but I've found that it's not great for other people to shop from.  Just be aware if you are registering online that you will want to make sure the items you are adding are available in the store(s) that people will be shopping at.  A lot of Target's inventory is online only.  I've been really frustrated when I've gone to buy from a friend's registry, that a large chunk of her items aren't even available in store (and I've procrastinated too long to shop online before the shower!).  Just wanted to throw that out there!

  • We have family in different countries so we will register on Babylist. I already wrote down a list of things we will need so I can start researching. After the 20 week scan, we'll register for a few things at Babies R Us  (stroller, car seat, p&p, etc) and just link that registry to our Babylist one.

  • Ooh, I started bookmarking items (or rather, adding) them to Baby List already. I'm hoping people figure out how to use it so they can just shop wherever for the items, be it at Target, BuyBuyBaby, Amazon, or Babies R Us...
I haven't added anything gender specific, but just main things we'll be needing (like a stroller, carrier) that I don't think will go OOS.
  • I like the idea of baby list but I'm afraid it will be confusing for the 50 and over crowd.

  • Thanks for all the advice! @chickendancefever that's why I want to do Baby List AND buy buy baby...to give people the option. At first I wanted to do Amazon, but baby list makes so much more sense since you can add from any website.

Now my husband and I just have to agree on the stuff we want. Ahhh wish me luck!

@chickendancefever I wouldn't let it confusing the older crowd be a concern. Two reasons, they can ask someone else if they are really confused and you'll get a lot that buy what they want to get as opposed to what is on the registry, particularly the older crowd.

ETA funny story: My 80 yr old grandma attempted to get my Target registry to shop off, but couldn't find it because she gave my maiden name instead of married name.

  • I used to work at BRU and I would have people come in all the time searching for registries and only give me the mom's first name.  They didn't bring the invitation and didn't know the last name.  They were always surprised when I couldn't do anything.

  • I registered at BRU and Amazon last time. I had said at the time that it would be nice to be able to put everything available online into a registry, and it looks like Baby List offers that option now! I currently have a BRU and Amazon registry for the completion discount, but I really am not expecting any gifts off of it. Sort of hoping I have another girl so that I can use the clothes, but I have a feeling it might be a boy this time. So hand-me-downs and consignment shops will likely be in my future!

So, we already created two registries--  one at Target and one at BuyBuyBaby-- both hidden. We did this so we could create a list of what we need and start getting more coupons from each store. BuyBuyBaby accepts Bed Bath & Beyond coupons as long as they are not expired. And we've already received a few coupons that allowed us to pick a few items here and there that are necessary but others aren't likely to buy for us; this way it also spreads out the spending. *Note with Buy Buy Baby-- if it's private, you can only edit it while IN STORE.

I agree with the Target comment about making sure it is sold in store-- for those items that weren't available in store-- we registered for them at Buy Buy Baby where they are in store-- and vice versa. We also registered for the cheaper version at each store since prices varied.

Our motivation was really to get a list going for us on our own and to start getting things little by little so it's not a huge spending spree.

With Buy Buy Baby-- their coupons often don't include the carseat/stroller section BUT you do get a 10% completion coupon 8 weeks prior to your date and you CAN use it on those items.

We chose not to go with Amazon because a lot of our friends/family aren't as addicted as we are since we are Prime members-- but, if someone asks for a wishlist-- we would be happy to send it to them.

I decided not to do Babylist after reading reviews and finding out from friends that it was more annoying than anything to use and a lot of people didn't mark something as purchased, or reserved and  never got that item so they ended up with multiples of the same thing from different stores and nothing of items that other people didn't get because they thought someone else had. They recommended doing it only if you were importing your other registries and adding the few items to it that weren't available at those stores.

In the end, Target and BuyBuyBaby had everything we wanted/needed between the two and are both relatively easy to shop.

    Hope this helps!
  • I just had my 8 week u/s and plan on going this weekend to do some in store research on baby items.  I may start a registry while I'm there but only because I don't get over to that store very often and if I see something that seems like something I would register for I'll go ahead.  I don't plan on registering for clothing or bibs, mainly just big stuff.  I haven't had a child in almost 10 years so this is exciting. :)  I say do it when it feels right to you!
