Hi! I know that everyone usually says to not be on any meds while they breastfeed but I have severe acid reflux and only can last a few weeks without meds before I get really ill. My pediatrician and my lactaid specialist at my hospital gave me the OK to be on the only meds that have worked for me. I have to choose between stopping breast feeding or breastfeeding while on these meds. Has anyone else ever been on Dexilant while breastfeeding or know someone who has? That is the one medicine that works. I would feel better going on it if I knew someone who had already done it before. Thank you for any help!!!

~ Proverbs 22:6 ~
The lactation consultant who ran the breastfeeding class I took at my hospital said that almost all meds are safe to continue taking while breastfeeding. Exceptions were hard core chemo and HIV meds, but other than that she just recommended not taking decongestants (b/c they can dry up your milk along with your sinuses) and not starting hormonal birth control until your supply is well established. She said that many drug companies and doctors will advise to stop breastfeeding when taking meds, but that is to avoid any possibility of litigation, not based on research. Although, it can be scary to go against advice like that! She also said that the timing of taking the meds could help if you are worried about it - like if you take it right after a feeding so it has basically metabolized by the time you have to feed again. Maybe see if there is a lactation specialist you can talk to?
