1st Trimester

1st trimester rash

I developed an intense rash on my arms and legs during week 9 (11 weeks now). My midwife prescribed a couple different medications last week to help with the itching and neither of those helped. She then decided to prescribe a low dose prednisone for a few days. Not only did any of those medications do anything but the rashes actually spread to my belly now. I've been slathering myself and hydrocortisone cream and calamine. It's keeping me awake at night for hours.

It's straight up evil. Has anyone else experienced this? What was done to treat it? My midwife is acting like she has never seen anything like this before in early pregnancy. (I've had two prior pregnancies with no issues with rashes)

Yes it was related to my prenatal vitamins, I highly recommend Mega Foods Baby and me. I stopped taking my prenatal vitamins and it went away, but switched. That's just my experience. keep us posted on what you find out.

  • I really appreciate your response. I'm willing to try just about anything at this point so I will switch up my vitamins. My midwife prescribed a higher dose steroid today so hopefully some relief will happen soon.
  • keep us posted on what happened. My rash went away after a week of switching up.
  • I had an appointment on Monday and left with quite a bit of frustration. My midwife brought an OB in to take a look at me and they both are thinking this is an allergy to something or winter dry skin. Which I actually found quite insulting. I've had allergies in the past and I take a benedryl and it's gone overnight. This is keeping me up at night. I'm getting maybe 4 hours of sleep a night. It's getting worse now that the steroid dose per day is decreasing. I know there isn't much they can do to cure this but they should be open to diagnosing this as hormonal. I'm trying anything and everything that is safe- including laying banana peels on my skin. It's miserable :(
  • @retrorhoda I had something very similar from week 5 to week 12ish started as little blisters like pimples on my legs all
over and then my belly and back. It was suuuuuper itchy and nothing was helping (hydrocortisone, prednisone, cream, etc) I was bathing myself in calamine. My OB was really puzzled about it saying PUPP usually comes way later in pregnancy, but that sometimes women react weirdly to the quick increasing of hormones level. It went away like it came, no explanation, but it was around the same time
my morning sickness got better and placenta took over. good luck

  • @jolydan  Thanks for your response! Mine actually did clear up miraculously right at the 13 week mark. I know it was something to do with hormones! My midwife is still insisting I had an allergy coupled with dry skin. The important thing is that it is over. But while it lasted it really was pure hell with little relief other than showering every couple hours- including in the middle of the night, and reapplying peppermint oil mixed with water. So glad it's over. Sorry to hear you dealt with the same thing...
  • Glad it cleared up!
  • I just developed a rash over the past few days. It's raised red bumps. Very itchy at times. It's behind my knees, under my boobs, my sides and on my thighs and hips. I've seen the doctor and she doesn't have an explanation. Said another patient came in with similar symptoms. Could be weather related. Could be heat rash. She said I could use Benadryl and hydrocortisone cream. So far it hasn't gone away...fingers crossed it goes away soon!
