Heartburn remedies? Natural preferred

What's your go to? I'm finding I've got to stuff myself full of bready food before bed to keep the acid down. Pizza, bagels, stuff like that. But I'm gaining too much weight from this and I'm not keen on eating this way as it is. It's the only thing I've found to help so far though. Vanilla ice cream worked a few times, as did chocolate milk, but each of those only lasted like 20 minutes.

  • i like to chew mint gum, actually. it's always helped me whenever i got any kind of heartburn (from drinking, eating certain foods, & pregnancy heartburn). maybe give that a try?

  • The easiest thing is to avoid the foods that cause it in the first place. It sucks but I feel so much better once I stop eating things that I know cause it.

Also, pizza is a bad idea because it has acids in the sauce.

  • I have been suffering from acidity long before my pregnancy and even worse during.  After each meal I either sip on a very cold glass of milk,  take a Tums or have a bit of ice cream.
  • I couldn't avoid it...water would cause it sometimes.  Milk seemed to be the most immediate and long lasting.
  • Don't eat anything 3 hours before bed! That has seemed to help, but there are some nights that it doesn't. So I drink a glass of milk with my zantac, which is over the counter.

  • If it is happening at bedtime, making sure your pillow (head) is raised helps. I use one Tums before bed which seems to help. My prenatal yoga clas also has a stretch which apparently helps (couldn't explain how it does though!). You interlock your hands in front of you, and bring them above your head and back down (towards your waist), several times.
  • The only thing that works for me is having multiple *very* small meals daily.
  • I've heard baking soda and water can help.

  • For me, I have to avoid the things that cause it - citrus fruits and juices (especially orange juice), tomatoes, spicy or fried/fatty foods, and onions. Both the cheese and the tomato sauce on pizza may be making things worse for you.
  • Someone may have suggested this already, but lately I take about 1 1/2 tsp of organic apple cider vinegar mixed with a little water. As soon as I drink it I wash it down with more water. It tastes gross, but usually it gets rid of the heartburn within a few minutes - and you don't have to feel bad about taking more medicine. Hope you find something that helps you!

The only thing that brought relief for me was delivery.  I went through three and a half jumbo sized bottles of tums while pregnant and still had heartburn all day, every day until the afternoon I had her.
  • I've heard apple cider vinegar also works
