Mirena & lower back pain

Have any of you ladies had the Mirena IUD and had lower back pain? I had mine inserted after Thanksgiving and since that was just about 6 weeks post partum, my lower back still was in some pain from labor. That hasn't gone away though, the lower back pain has gotten worse. I've been seeing a chiropractor since the beginning of January and there is little to no progress - my lower back still hurts :( It's especially painful when I lean over and pick up something heavy (like my 18lb son!). I thought the chiro would help and even the doctor is confused as to why his treatments/stretches aren't working. I've been doing some research and it looks like a side effect of the Mirena IUD can be lower back pain. I guess I never really thought about the IUD being the cause of this. Anyone have a similar experience? I'm thinking I might call my OB to schedule an appointment and see if she thinks the IUD could be the reason for the back pain.

Re: Mirena & lower back pain

  • I would make an appointment. I have mirena currently (and have had it in the past) and never experienced lower back pain. There could be other reasons for your back pain (large baby, epidural ect..) but if stretches and chiropractor aren't working, I would get it checked out as a mirena side affect. In the meantime, you could also try strengthening your core to see if that helps at all. Good luck!

  • I got the iud 5 weeks pp and had lower back pain and constant bleeding(ranged from light to medium, never just spotting!) for 4 months! Finally when the bleeding stopped the back pain when away. I would mention it to your dr but they'll probably say the same thing they told me was to give it time and at 6 months most side effects should stop. I think it's just that your body has to adjust to the iud, but definitely tell your Dr just to be sure!
  • I had the copper iud prior to pregnancy and my body rejected it.  I had immobilizing cramps during my period and strange pain in my  low back/abdomin constantly... Go see a doc & make sure u cover the bases.  I had to have mine removed
  • I had the Mirena in the past. After 9 months,  I had it removed due to constant lower back pain and abdominal cramping
