Working too much

I work about 55-62 hours a week. I am 27 weeks and I am starting to lose my mind. Its a very fast paced job and I am always afraid of calling off or asking for a half day (we work 6 days in a row) I am feeling so exhausted lately like a may pass out. Not sure what to do...any suggestions? I also am a STM so I have a wonderful and very well behaved 1 1/2 year old. and an amazing husband who helps so much with her. . .

Re: Working too much

  • Could you get your doctor to write a note saying you need to cut back? It may feel a little less awkward asking for it if it's Dr's orders.

I'd talk with your doctor about your schedule and the nature of your work to get a recommendation in writing that you can use to talk to your boss/HR. That should give you some reassurance to be sure that you're keeping up with your duties, but not to the detriment of your health. If work-from-home, or off-your-feet is an option, try to push for that as much as you reasonably can.
  • I have an apt tomorrow, I may talk to them about it. I have had extreme swelling the past week in my ankles and I try to run 3 times a week and have to do it at night after my LO is in bed. But with the swelling I have not been able to and my swelling is making my legs just ache. . .

I had a good deal of swelling last pregnancy from being on my feet all day and not drinking enough water-- I know it can be really painful. I found that besides increasing my water intake and *trying* to find moments to put my feet up, walking (or incline walking if you have a treadmill that inclines) with tightly tied tennis shoes helped to bring down the swelling much better than running. I hope you can get some relief!
  • What type of work do you do? I work 50-60 hours weekly, but I am not on my feet. I am an attorney so I'm able to work remotely from home at night and on the weekends to get my hours so that I mainly just have to be at the office the typical 8:30-5:30. I also generally work through lunch so that I can leave a little earlier than I would otherwise. My boss doesn't love it but, I make sure to get all my work done so he has nothing to complain about. Do you have the option of rearranging your schedule to allow breaks or working from home?
  • I know this is not going to help with your problem, I just want to say that I am sorry that you feel so exhausted. I only work 8 to 5 , so I have it easy in comparison, and still, I'm knackered a lot of the time.
I find it sad that somehow there seems to be all this pressure to work as if nothing's happened.... I mean... ffs...  we are growing a human. And then you're supposed to keep working, if possible till labour, maybe work even harder, so you can show everyone how tough you are and how you're not affected AT ALL by your pregnancy. Have the baby, come back as soon as  possible (who cares if you've healed physically and mentally) and voila. That's it.
    It's a bit sad, really!!!

You've reminded me of this article I read recently: Having It All Kinda Sucks

Great read, thank you @kbrands7 ! This seems so very true. No matter what route you go, if you chose to be a SAHM or a working mom, there is all this judgement and all this pressure. And having it all? Really does seem impossible... (at least not if you expect every aspect of this "all" , whatever it means to you, to be 100 % fulfilled).

  • I work from home, but I'm feeling it too. My department just lost three key staff over the past three months, so we're short staffed AND it's busy season to boot. At this point, I've been pulling 20-35 OT hours per pay period for going on two months with the only end in sight being FMLA in around 11 more weeks.

I'm thankful to at least be hourly so I get paid for OT, but it's still just too much!
  • I generally work constant overtime (not uncommon for me to work 8-10 months straight of 50-70hrs per week). My doctor wrote me a note that my work week is not to exceed 40hrs as I am able. ( I would have had the doctor say less hours but we need the money). Still it really helps!
