December 2015 Moms

Have any of you babies had a common cold yet?

I just noticed DD has started coughing a bit here and there (she's not coughing a lot, like alarmingly) and she had boogers so thick today when she woke up, they were hard to clear. When I got one though with the suction she gagged, and also sometimes her spit up will be extra mucus and white.  Just wondering  if babies this young (8 weeks) get boogers a lot? Or what are some signs that you noticed that ended up being colds for your LOs?

She has an appointment Monday, so I will have her checked out, I'm not asking for medical advice, just signs from experience

thanks ladies!

Re: Have any of you babies had a common cold yet?

  • DD has caught a cold from my mother. She has a lot of snot that I suck out every time I change her diaper. A tiny cough I think is post nasal drip. She just got her 2 month vaccines on Thursday and she was sick then. The doctor told us it wasn't in her chest so to just use the nasal aspirator as needed. She's super fussy, tired, and fighting sleep but it could be the shots playing in as well.
DD is 10 weeks. I noticed it was a cold because I could hear it in her breathing that she's congested and normally I very rarely get anything if I use the nosefrida on her and I'm getting adult sized amounts now. She doesn't have a fever but we've been checking just in case a few times a day.
We also get some mucus in her spit up.

  • DD had a cold at 3 weeks. We took her to the doctor because she was coughing and gagging. DH and I also had the cold so I was on the lookout for it. The doctor said the gagging was from mucus build up combined with reflux. Luckily she never had a fever so I think it was mild. We just kept on top of saline and the nose Frida suction. She didn't sleep well during the cold either.

  • Mine did at his 2 month appt. same as pp - use saline and nasal aspirant or. My pediatrician said she is only worried if he is vomiting a lot (not spit up), has a high fever or his lungs sound fluid-y or congested in the stethoscope.
  • Dd has a cold right now- we are just doing the nosefrida, Vicks on her chest/back & feet at night & before naps (baby Vicks), also did a mild vapo bath last night. We sleep on a pile of pillows with her in my arms.
hope your lo feels better soon
  • DD had a cold at 4 weeks thanks to her big brother. Dr wasn't concerned as long as her breathing was ok and no fever. It went away in a few days, probably thanks to bfing.
  • LO has one right now. We are sucking his nose out at every diaper change and we use the Vicks vapor humidifier in our room. This cold coincided with his immunizations so I'm not sure if it's got something to do with that. I haven't gone to the doctor because he hasn't had a fever and is really just stuffy with a dry cough.

  • We are on the upside of a cold. Both LO and I had it while DH is quarantined to the bedroom with a flu. Nose sucker and the humidifier with the Vicks steam stuff worked wonders for us.
  • Update is, we had her appointment today, and she was due for vaccinations, but has a viral infection  :(( so they won't do it yet.
Shes on Tylenol and rest and hopefully she gets better soon, they moved the vaccinations to next week
  • My DD has a bad cough. We've already been to a walk in clinic and she has been seen by a doctor. I'm just wondering if your babies are a lot less when they had their colds?  DD is eating way less and it has surprised me.
  • Yeah she's eating less and sleeping more. I brought her it up and pedi said if she just refuses to eat at all, then take them to ER. I'm surprised she's gaining good weight though, *knock on wood*
  • DS has had this cold for over a week so, even though he doesn't have a fever, I'm taking him to get checked out today.

  • Posted yesterday about DD eating less amd havkng a cough...24 hours later and we have been to the ER and are spending at least one night. DD has RSV and is showing some signs of respiratory distress. I hope it's only one night and that she can go home tmorrow.
  • @KRH6829 I'm sorry your LO has RSV! I know that can be nasty and is the reason I took my DD in when she had cold symptoms since it's not something to mess around with. Praying you girl feels better and gets to come home soon.

I'm so sorry to hear that! I hope your DD gets well quickly and she can go home soon. My DD was in the hospital for 3 days when she was 5 weeks old- she had a uti/kidney infection. It was the longest 3 days of my life. The best advice I was given was to go home and take a shower. It helped me feel so much better both mentally and physically.
  • Oh man!! Hope she's better soon- so scary!
  • Thanks for the well wishes. We have been in the hospital over two nights now, but she looks so much better this morning!!!  They are going to start weaning her off of oxygen today and she kept down formula this morning for the first time in a couple of days. She has only been having pedialyte and had to have some iv fluids. If she continues to keep her formula down and does well as they reduce the oxygen we may get to go home tomorrow. RSV is no joke.
  • @Catherine1021 I am not even at home. This has all happened while I am visiting my parents with DD and DS who is two. My parents have been amazing taking care of my son and my mom comes everyday so I can go to their house to shower and see my son. I definitely feel better after showering and changing clothes.
  • @KRH6829 I'm glad to hear your LO is better. My son just developed a cough and congestion. I hope it doesn't turn into RSV. So scary!
