Blood/genetic test that tells the gender?

Forgive me... I can't remember what that test is called. But last time I was pregnant (in 2014) the OB told me they give this test to everyone 35+ and it's becoming standard and a lot of insurances are starting to cover it. I'm curious if anyone has/had this test done? And when do they typically do it? I'm assuming it's not done this early because we haven't seen any gender reveals yet on this board ;)

Also, if you're eligible for it, will you do it? If you're not 35+.. would you ask if you could have it done?

Re: Blood/genetic test that tells the gender?

  • I think it's called free cell DNA and it's usually done at 8-12 weeks, but I don't know much about it. I do know it's done to detect chromosomal abnormalities so it is done if the couple has risk factors.

I had it done last pregnancy (DS is now one). The specific test I was given was the Panorama, but Harmony is the same thing. They are NOT offered simply to find out the sex of the baby (I've never heard of any OB administering these tests just for that purpose) but to screen for genetic abnormalities. Usually you can opt to find out the sex at the same time.

They are covered by insurance if you are AMA (35+) and many offices won't even offer these screenings if you're under that age. Mine does, but we had to pay out of pocket ($120 after a subsidy by the company that produces the test).

    Edit for clarity.
  • I'm not 35 yet, but will be by the time I deliver, so my Doctor recommended the non-invasive prenatal blood test to assess the risk for any chromosomal birth defects.  I did the test called Verifi.  It was super easy, they took blood for me and didn't have to do any procedure with the baby.  We also got to find out the gender super early.  The test predicted that we're having a girl!  I'm currently trying to figure out how accurate the test is in predicting gender.  We would love to share the news, but don't want everyone to start buying things for the wrong gender.

  • @Vagarcia16 - you've already had the blood draw? Typically the testing is not available until at least 10 weeks. As for the accuracy of the results for your baby's sex, there's nothing to be concerned about. It's not a "prediction," it's looking at the baby's DNA. If there's no Y chromosome present, it's a girl.
  • Yes, I had my blood drawn at 11weeks, 3days.  We received the results last week, we're 13 weeks today.  :)

I figured it would be quite accurate, but saw on some other threads that there are often mistakes when a girl is predicted, because somehow the test is picking up mom's chromosomes?  I was just wondering how often that happens.

  • Gotcha. I thought you were an October mom so I was confused.
  • I had the test done with my last pregnancy, and plan to have it done with this one. I think the one I did was called Maternit21. I'm only 29, but my doctor strongly recommends it to all of her patients if they can afford it out of pocket. This testing company has an out of pocket discount so it isn't that bad. It's nice just to have the piece of mind and not have another set of things to worry about. It was an easy process. They drew the blood at my Dr.'s office at 10 weeks and 2 weeks later we had results.

  • Just to find out the sex? No. That's not what the medical screen (Harmony I believe is the name) is for. It screens for very serious abnormalities that could end a baby's life. It's not to do just so you know what color to paint the nursery. If you choose to get genetic screening then I think it's in terrible taste to do it just so you can find out the sex.

Also, sex is between the legs & gender is between the ears.

  • Sorry my post was terribly worded! I didn't inquire about the test purely about finding out the sex... That's why I wrote "genetic test". I was simply referring to the one that does predict the sex as a descriptor because I didn't know what it was called. I'm interested in the test for all factors including, heaven forbid, any issues. Im an anxious mom and would love to know asap if everything is ok!

I see what you mean. I didn't mean to seem like I was jumping on you. I believe its Harmony but the MaternT21 is also one. I think there are a bunch of them depending on your provider.
