Preventing Stretch Marks

Now I know stretch marks come from genetics and how much elasticity is in the skin... But I still want to do everything I can to prevent them and that means finding a good cream/lotion. So STMs, what creams would you recommend to prevent stretch marks?

Re: Preventing Stretch Marks

  • Not a STM, but my friend recommended bio oil to me because I've already gone up half a cup size and I was complaining about the pain and itchiness.  But like you said, it's mostly genetics and creams can't penetrate deep enough to really make a difference.  (but I'm still buying the bio oil)

  • I didn't get stretch marks until my third pregnancy. I only got a few small ones and I used creams and body butter and lotions to prevent. I don't remember the brands at the moment. I did gain more weight with my third child than my first two and I think my skin was at its limit. So if someone knows the true miracle cream Id like to know as well! Otherwise I always get some type of belly butter that smells good to me and apply each day hoping I don't get more.

  • I have stretch marks all the way above my belly button from my 2 previous children. I tried everything and was constantly lathering myself up with lotions and creams. I've basically given up on trying to prevent them. I figure I'll just get myself a tummy tuck when we're done having children.

Let me know how the bio oil feels on! I tried coconut oil but it left me feeling greasy.. Wondering if all oils will do that
  • I have stretch marks from puberty. I completely give up on the ones from pregnancy--apparently I'm prone to them, because it's not like I gained a ton of weight at puberty really quickly.

  • I used Palmer's cocoa butter - the harder stuff in the tub. It'll leave you greasy but I didn't get any stretch marks.

  • As PPs have said, nothing can really prevent them, but if you want to give it your best shot, drink plenty of water and lotion daily. Good luck!

  • I didn't use any cream last pregnancy and I didn't get any stretch marks. My mom said she didn't either and she had 5 kids. I think it's definitely genetic.
But, I really, really think that drinking plenty of water and gaining weight at a steady pace will help.

  • I personally swear by baby oil. Also not over eating and gaining too much bump at once. I think it's only like 200-300 extra calories you need everyday. Sticking to that helps give you the best shot of your belly growing at a more steady and healthy rate. Good luck!

  • I have stretch marks just from gaining weight, so I doubt I'll be able to avoid any more. However, I have found that when my tummy feels too full after a meal, rubbing it with belly cream sure does feel good...

  • IDK a specific oil or cream, but I would just say keep your skin moisturized all day every day to help! I didn't get a single stretch mark with DS so I'm hoping I get lucky my 2nd time around too.

  • I used cocoa butter with DS but hated the smell. Switched to Mama Bee by Burt's Bees. Am trying RawShea by Shea Moisture this time but I've also heard coconut oil is fantastic. I do believe it's genetic but the creams help with the itchiness.

  • I use a generic cocoa butter in the AM and "tummy butter" at bedtime. I got that one at Walmart

If you're prone to stretch marks, you'll get stretch marks. They fade over time-- mine are almost completely gone.

That being said, I used bio oil and burt's bees mama bee belly butter. It really didn't make a difference, the stretch marks were still apparent, but it did help with the itchiness and when my skin felt way too tight towards the end.

    ETA: clarity.
