*UPDATED* 20 week A/S results left me feeling unsure...

edited February 2016 in July 2016 Moms
Hi guys- if there is somewhere better to put this tell me. I couldn't find anything but that doesn't mean much. I just need to share this with someone other than my husband.
So we just had our 20 week anatomy scan. Little dude was lounging and our ultrasound took forever! It was fun to see him though. It seemed pretty standard through most of it. But they kept going back to his heart for more images. They took about a zillion pictures and I started to get a little anxious...Then we were shuffled to our exam room where the results took over an hour for the high risk(?!?!) doctor across town to read and compile in a report. We ended up being told that he has a tendon stretched across a ventricle in his heart and a neonatal cardiologist will call us on Thursday to determine if we should have an echo done or any other measures. My sister is a cardiac nurse and is both reassuring me and making me worry more. I'm trying to keep things in perspective and not stress but as a first time mom I feel about ready to burst into tears. Has anyone experienced a similar concern at their appointment?

UPDATE: Good news everyone! Baby'S heart concern is just a typical anatomic variant and nothing at all to be concerned about. It is a false tendon (just a part of his heart) and perfectly normal. What a relief! Thanks for all the warm wishes. Ladies who shared their own concerns, please update us as well!

  • I don't have experience but I'm sorry your scan ended up being scary. Sending you positive thoughts and good energy that everything will turn out okay! Keep us posted.

  • I apologize I don't have any experience, but wanted to let you know I am thinking of you and praying for you and your little one.
  • I don't have experience with any heart related issues, but with our ds his 20 week ultrasound showed a high level of fluid surrounding his left kidney. After that appointment, we had to go in every 2 weeks to check the fluid level. The doctors had me absolutely scared to death. After he was born, we saw a pediatric urologist and he shared with us that it was actually pretty common and to not be scared. We had to have an ultrasound of his kidneys done every 3 months at first and when everything remained the same they moved to every 6 months. He was released at the age of 2.

  • I am so sorry you're having to go through this! I just had an ultrasound at 18wks 4days and I have been a wreck ever since! During my ultrasound everything was going super well. We found out we are having a boy, his little arms, legs, fingers and toes were all perfect. Heart looked great, brain looked great! And i was so so happy. The tech went to go get the DR. and I was just so filled with joy. Then the doctor pointed out a small pocket of fluid next to baby's stomach. I saw it and thought nothing of it, but it's potentially very serious. The DR. said it was possibly duodenal atresia. About 30% of babies with duodenal atresia have down syndrom, and the babies born without down syndrome will need surgery right away to remove the blockage and won't be able to eat until he's healed. I'm only 26 and have no history on my side or my husband's for birth defects/disorders of any kind. So DS is highly unlikely, not to mention baby has no other common signs. But the idea of weeks in the hospital unable to hold or breastfeed my baby is so terrifying. This is my first pregnancy, and instead of decorating my baby boy's nursery, I'm laying in bed crying. I know how hard the not knowing is and I truly feel for you and your family. My thoughts are with you and I hope everything turns out great for you and your baby boy.
  • I'm so sorry @theshannondee I don't have experience, as I have my a/s next week, but I do have a fetal echo scheduled due to my brother having heart disease and a pacemaker. So I've been anxious since I knew there was a possibility my baby could have something wrong with their heart. I am thinking of you and hoping all turns out ok!!
  • I don't have any experience as well but I'm sending my T&Ps!
  • Sending you my thoughts and prayers.

  • @theshannondee and @AshleyRadke my thoughts are with you ladies! I hope this is something that can work itseft out before your LOs are born
  • That sounds scary!  It's awful that they don't tell you what's going on until afterwards too.  I can't imagine what was going through your mind.  Keep us posted.
  • I have no experience, i'm sorry. T&P heading your way!

  • T&P for you and baby! A lot of problems at the a/s have time to resolve so try to think about that! And until you have further testing and see the cardiologist there is nothing definitive!
  • @theshannondee and @ashleyradke I'm praying for both of you and your babies!

  • I wish I had more to say; sending lots of positive thoughts to both you and @AshleyRadke.
  • @theshannondee For my last pregnancy, I can't recall what they saw at the a/s exactly, but there was some issue they wanted to look at further and we did get referred into a separate echo.

All I can tell you is that I was very anxious about it, but all was fine. I went for a lot of ultrasounds last pregnancy because her NT scan was slightly abnormal and she was always measuring on the small side. But she was born perfectly healthy despite all of it. This is just to say that many times they are being cautious. And agree with others that if there is a current issue it's very likely to resolve itself.

Best of luck and keep us updated. Fingers crossed everything's just fine. Try your best to relax, I know it's hard.

  • T&P's. This is such a scary situation. We had our 18 week scan last week and they couldn't tell if anything was definitely wrong with the heart but there was enough to worry them, so we go back next week for another scan. I am trying to stay positive and know that a lot can be done with hearts even if there is an issue. Hang in there mama!

  • My son had a ventricular septal defect that they detected fairly early on. I was of course really concerned but they assured me over and over again that it was pretty common for them to find irregularities because of how advanced ultrasounds have become. I had a few more ultrasounds than normal (lots of pictures!) but it ended up closing well before he was born. I'm hoping this will be the case for you, as well, and you end up with tons of cute ultrasound pictures.
  • Yes, we had "something" on our scan that the doctor mentioned isn't a concern but he wanted to flag it anyway. Ummm, thanks for the worry.

As for you, as PPs have said a lot of issues resolve on their own. One of the blessings, but curses, of modern medicine is that we are able to see EVERYTHING about our babies. While it can be unsettling, just keep in mind that at the end of the day all of this is science. Your doctor and team now have more information that they can use to make sure everything goes okay. The more information the better, even if it makes us antsy haha. T&P your way!!

  • @AshleyRadke my a/s on Monday was similar. The tech didn't say anything was wrong and we were feeling so good. We had our appointment with the doctor right after and she asked if the tech had told us anything. She then proceeded to tell us that our daughter has gastroschisis  (some of her intestines are outside her abdomen through a hernia). We got no more information than that. We are being referred to a high risk specialist an hour away from where we live. I don't know what to do from here or what will happen after she's born other than the fact that she will need surgery. Sending good vibes your way and hoping we all get answers soon.

Hopefully it will be reassuring to see the MFM. Obviouy, nobody wants their baby to have to go through surgery… But I hope that your child's can be fixed very easily.

Sorry you have to go through this, but hopefully you'll get more answers from the specialist. My thoughts are with you.
