Baby with FOMO?!

this girl fights her sleep day and night. For the past three...maybe four...I'm not sure anymore...days she just refuses to go to sleep. Naps during the day? Nope. Bedtime? A battle. After a middle of the night feeding? Not for hourss after (going on 3hrs now). She's not crying or screaming her head off or anything...she just won't let herself go to sleep. We've tried everything! Her usual bedtime routine....a new routine...white noise (which works better on DH and I more than her)...warm baths...rocking...swaddling...cuddling. She just won't let it happen.

Any suggestions?!

Re: Baby with FOMO?!

  • Make sure you are getting her down for naps during the day before she gets too tired.  Watch her cues and get her to sleep at the first sign she is getting a little tired, we swaddle and rock for naps.  Babies are so much harder to get down if they are overtired.  The saying sleep begets sleep has been so true for all my kids.  Make sure she gets enough sleep napping during the day and she will probably sleep better at night.  Good luck, it gets easier!

  • Makes perfect sense @jeanbug12 except that she won't nap either! She yawns, closes her eyes for a bit and then snaps herself out of it and wakes herself up. No matter where she is. She goes to bed not too bad likely because she's exhausted from not napping all day. I'm just not sure how to get her to nap better during the day. She just fusses all day long.

  • We've been having the same problem the last couple of days. DS (3 weeks old) has started fighting sleep after he wakes for a feed. He takes over an hour to feed (between breast and supplemented formula) because he eats so slow (we know he's hungry, he's good at telling us when he's one), but then he just won't go down. The most successful way I've found to get him to nap in the day is by wearing him in his wrap, otherwise it's super hard and he stays awake for 3 hours at a time, which completely throws off his feeding pattern too.

Have you tried baby wearing? It doesn't work for night of course but it really helps us for his day time naps.
  • Do you think its because she might still be hungry and can't relax? My lil guy has to eat on one side, burp, get a diaper change, then eat on the other side to have a full belly and relax.

Also, Ebiejay has a good point with baby wearing. I don't have anything fancy, just the $30 infantino brand one from WalMart but I just walk around the block with him in that and a sheet over to block out the sun. If the wearing doesn't work, try taking her for a car ride after a feeding. Either way, it helps get you out of the house and clear your mind a bit.

  • @Nyssana even after she's finished eating she does the whole dozing off and then waking up game. It's honestly like she's fighting going to sleep. Even though she's clearly tired! I've just un-boxed my baby wearer as you and @Ebiejay suggested so I'll give that a try. I believe DH just finally got her to nap in the swing as I can hear birds chirping haha.

You probably need to start trying to get her down sooner. It just sounds like she is over tired and over stimulated, babies fight sleep when they are too tired.
  • I'm interested about this as well..
My son is 7 weeks old and he's been doing this for weeks now..
He falls asleep for about 1.5mins then wakes up and checks his surroundings like he's supposed to guard the place or something.
During the day the only way he will nap is if we are holding him or we take him for a ride in the car- but, you put him down or take him out of the car seat he will wake up in an instant.
After he eats it takes him HOURS to get back to sleep- he doesn't cry he just refuses to sleep.
Ive tried playing with him to try to get him tired -- failed
    feeding him --failed
swaddling -- works but takes an hour to get him there

the pedi reccomended waking him every 3hrs to feed regardless of when he falls asleep but since he's not sleeping well when he's out I let him sleep.. ( example: he ate at 8am, fell asleep at 10am -- supposed to wake up at 11 but mommy was napping too., he's still asleep at 12:30) during the day when he's more awake he will clearly let you know he's hungry even if you are 1 minute late..

one thing that works is the gerber colic drops -- he's not gassy but for some reason it soothes him and he knocks out ( we use this at night so we can get sleep as well )

we we plan to buy a swing when taxes come in...

He just fights sleep so hard - then he gets pissed off about it,
  • That was my son (14 months now). From the time we brought him home from the hospital, sleep was nonexistent. He would literally go from 7 am until 11 pm without a single nap. He didn't have colic, but did have horrible reflux. For quite a while, he would only sleep at night if he was held. Then it was his swing. And as bad as it sounds, for the sake of my own health and sanity, he slept in that damn swing... for 8 months. We tried everything to get him into his crib. Finally after those 8 months, something clicked and he was on with it. Now he's an amazing sleeper! Goes to bed at about 830 every night, and sleeps until 10 in the morning! Then takes roughly a 2 hour nap without a fuss.
