NIPT?

Hi ladies, I haven't introduced myself at all yet but I am due with little #2 on October 19th. So, hello! Congrats to all of you.

With my first, I had the Panorama test done around 9 or 10 weeks. I'm not AMA or high risk for anything, but having as much information as possible as early as possible was very important to my partner and I, and is equally important this time around. With baby #1, I did my research and called the testing company (Natera, in this case) multiple times (and even recorded the calls discussing pricing info) so I was prepared for the big bill that came and knew to call them and explain that my insurance company denied coverage, so I ended up paying I think $160 out of pocket, if I remember correctly. A big part of why I knew to do all of this was because NIPT was a popular topic on my BMB at that time. I haven't really seen it come up on here, so I was wondering if anyone is planning on having/has had a NIPT and what you've heard about current pricing, etc. etc. I'm not sure if it's discussed less these days because doctors/midwives are more informed and you're hearing about NIPT during your appointments, or if it's less shiny and new, so it's not getting as much buzz/media coverage. Regardless, I'd love to hear your thoughts and thanks in advance for any info you have!

Re: NIPT?

  • I asked my OB about it at my 6wk ultrasound today.  (My first baby/pregnancy so this is all brand new to me.)  He said he prefers not to do the NIPT tests until after the NT scan at 12 weeks because if something is abnormal at the scan, I would then get insurance coverage for the NIPT test. At least, I think that's what he said.  I was very overwhelmed as we were literally in the middle of the ultrasound during this convo and I was distracted! I would totally pay the $150-200 or so out of pocket to do the test sooner.  I'm going to see him again at exactly 10 weeks so I might ask to do it then and revisit this.  My DH doesn't want to find out the sex so I'll be just looking to make sure there are no chromosomal issues.  I got blood taken for the Counsyl test today -- not the NIPT one, but the genetic screening one.

  • As I get closer to my first appt I will call the company that makes the harmony test. Supposedly they may help work with you on pricing of your insurance doesn't cover it. I doubt mine does, but I will also be calling then to check.

With DS we did the NT scan and blood work. We paid about $300 out of pocket for that. So if we cannot afford the the harmony test than we will do the NT test again.

  • Thanks, ladies. I will say--I switched practices shortly after I had the blood work for the Panorama test done and ended up also doing the NT scan as a result. The NT scan ended up costing more than the Panorama test, and it has a much higher rate of false positives than NIPT testing. Plus, it doesn't test for nearly as many things. If I can do a NIPT for a similar price again this time, I will not do the NT scan.

I'll try to get on the phone with a couple of the NIPT testing companies over the next week or two, but would still appreciate hearing if anyone else has spoken with them and what you are hearing. These companies want NIPT to be standard of care, so the push is typically for mamas to submit through their insurance companies and be denied coverage. It's just really, really important to confirm what the max out of pocket cost is prior to having the test done.

  • I am planning to do the NIPT this time.  I believe it will be covered by insurance since I will be AMA (35 years old by delivery).
