Making baby food

I never thought I would (not sure why, just didn't envision myself doing it), but I'm considering making my own baby food for LO. He is 16 weeks right now so not quite ready yet, but when the time comes it's an option I'm exploring. Or maybe half and half depending on how much time I have to invest in it (not that I currently have any free time). Has anyone made their own baby food in the past or anyone who is currently making their own? Looking for tips and dos/donts. Thanks in advance!

Re: Making baby food

  • I know quite a few mama friends that have done this! I plan on giving it a shot, so much more cost effective. My friend found some great little containers on amazon, perfect for portion sizes that can be frozen or microwaved. She makes up batches for the week every Sunday and it seems to work well. Curious to see what other suggestions pop up!

  • I am definitely going to make baby food when the time comes. It's so easy to boil and mash vegetable. I have a blender for smoothies and I will be using that. It's easy enough to blend veg and meat or fish. I way prefer it to buying food where I have to worry about additives and E numbers, even if organic. Plus the cost factor...

I'm definitely going to do it- so much cheaper and I'll  know exactly what goes into it. Buy buy baby has plastic "ice cube" trays for about $7 (the good, chemical free plastic) that make 15 one-ounce cubes. That way when you purée, you can pour into trays and defrost a cube or two at a time as needed. Also when baby grows and takes more at each feeding they have the reusable plastic pouches that you can attach a spoon to. Check Pinterest- they have great pins on recipes, tips and dos and don'ts on what baby can and can't in the beginning.

Yes! I got a baby brezza. It steams and purées the food.
  • I'm taking a baby food class at a local cooking school in March!  I also got some small containers at babies r us a few weeks ago as they were on clearance.

I have used a Baby Brezza to make pureed squash, sweet potato, and pears. I lovs it but I am learning that the riper the fruit/veg the better.
  • Thankful for this thread  just returned my Baby Bullet to get the Baby Brezza! Yay! I didn't even know they existed !
  • I made a lot of my own baby food and also bought some.  I bought the food that had things in it that I wasn't making for him so he would be introduced to a wide variety of food.  I would also use the baby food isle for inspiration.  I used ice cube trays to freeze the food in portions and then in 24 hours, popped all of the cubes into a large glass container and kept frozen.  I didn't have much luck with puréed meats because they were dry and chalky once puréed and I also didn't buy baby food jar meat. I made yogurt and he ate a lot of that for protein in the beginning. Once he could chew better, I fed him meat in diced tomato sauce with green beans, onions and spices for example. I would put this in a blender for a couple seconds and the consistency would be okay.  For the most part, after 8-10 months or so he ate what we ate just chopped up.   We mainly eat a veggie based diet.  I stopped making seperate "meals" for him.
  • I used the baby bullet for my son when he was younger. I absolutely love it! I would make a batch on Sunday and be set for the week. I love knowing what's going in his tummy so I will definitely be doing it for my daughter. It's not time consuming at all. I would just make his food while I made us breakfast or dinner on Sunday and then put it in small one serving containers and be set. :) although don't feel like you need a baby machine to make baby food. They are just glorified blenders in my opinion. But as a first time mom i thought i absolutely needed it. Now, second time around.. im like well thats great i have it. But really ya just need the containers.
  • I made some of my own and bought some. Fruits and veggies that I felt I couldn't purée thinly enough I bought (like green beans, blueberries). I did my own brown rice, banana, apple, carrot, and sweet potato.
  • I have a baby bullet, can't wait to use it!
  •  I made all of my vegetables and most fruits in a regular blender. Steam, roast etc., blend, and then put an ice cube tray.  Once they're frozen pop them in a gallon size Ziploc with a label.   The night before I would pull out cubes of whatever I wanted to give her and thaw them in the fridge.  I made squash, sweet potato, carrot, broccoli, green beans, lima beans, zucchini, pear, apple, peach, plum, and I'm sure a few more that I'm forgetting.

It is actually really easy to do  end it gives you complete control of what's in the baby food.  I did make meat but it was pretty gross and chose to buy jarred with my second.  Also, by the time I got to feeding her berries I chose to buy that because I did not want to deal with getting out all the seeds.

If you plan on mixing any of them with breast milk, do it when you're serving rather than when you're freezing.  That way if you thaw and don't use it right away you don't have to toss it out.

  • I really wanted the baby Brezza on my registry. But did not receive it. Trying to decide if it is worth buying. It's pricey buy I like that it steams it. If it was just about the puree factor I'd just use a food processor. But it seems a lot easier to steam without using a microwave. Thoughts from the who have it? Those who don't,  what's the easiest way you steam cook?
  • I just bought this one:
    https://www.amazon.com/BEABA-Babycook-Pro-2X-Gipsy/dp/B00A6Y6AH2

It does everything! I figured this way would be less messy, less washing up and I get everything done in one place. I don't need it for another two months but I am excited and got it for a great price. It's also BPA free, which is important to me.
  • I bought the baby Brezza at Target and used it once, it was amazing. Yeah it's easy enough to do it other ways but I just thought it was so convenient to just throw it in there.

anyway, it was cracked so i returned it and then zulily had the bigger version for only $20 more! I think they're on sale til tomorrow or Tuesday morning and they have several other baby food making things (containers, food processors, etc). I ordered the baby Brezza larger one. I can't wait for it to get here!
  • Would a nutribullet work the same as a baby bullet? I got one for Christmas and figure two birds one stone.
  • I made DD's baby food.  It is super easy if you just meal prep on sundays (I work).  It took no time at all and I was able to feed her totally organic baby food.  I felt really good about it.  I am happy to share recipes if wanted.

    I'd love some recipes.
  • babyfoode.com has great recipes and is organized really well in terms of age, etc.

  • Had a look at the 4 months plus food - wow it looks delicious! Actually getting more and more excited about solids! Thanks for sharing!
