Moms of Babies who Sleep Well

Mommas whose babies are good sleepers: Do you wake your baby after a certain number of hours so they can eat / have their diaper changed? My 9-week old has been sleeping 6-8+ hours since about 7 weeks, but I get nervous about her being too hungry / sitting in a wet diaper for any longer than 8 hours, so I end up waking her up to change/eat and then normally she goes back to sleep for another 2-3 after that. Should I just leave her alone?

Re: Moms of Babies who Sleep Well

  • Babies can get valuable calories at night, but your LO may be getting enough in the day to be fine. I would just let her sleep (which is fine at night if they're back at their birth weight). The only reason I would wake DD is if I knew her diaper had a ton of poop.

  • After two weeks and gaining back birth weight you can let a baby sleep. I put petroleum jelly on him to protect at night.
  • Let you baby sleep. DD slept from 10:30 to 8 last night. Just enjoy the sleep that you can get!
  • Let her sleep! If she's really hungry or her diaper is bothering her, she'll let you know.
  • I agree with all of these ladies; unless your pediatrician has voiced concerns about health or weight issues let her sleep!
  • I let little man sleep. I only change him if he has a dirty diaper. If he ever gets a diaper rash of course I will change him more often. For the first month the pediatrician had us wake him up every three hours to feed him. Now we let him sleep! He will wake up when he's hungry. 9 weeks 14lbs 6oz.
  • My little girl is on her own schedule... She goes to bed 9-10pm sleeps until 7-8 am sometimes she sleeps a full 12-14 hours but I always wake her up by 9am. My pediatrician told me to just let her do whatever. She gets weighed next Tuesday... I'd say she's a good 9-10lbs now she just turned 10 weeks yesterday.
  • I let my girl sleep and say hallelujah! She's gone 6 1/2 hours straight and last night was her first 7 hour stretch. Her diaper is loaded in the morning but it doesn't seem to bother her and so far she's never gotten any diaper rash. She eats constantly and barely naps all day despite my efforts to get her to, so I guess she's fueling up for her long sleep at night.

  • Zoe will sometimes sleep 8+ hours straight during the night and I wake her up in the morning. Her diaper is always soaked otherwise I'd let her sleep.
  • My pediatrician suggested setting an alarm to wake him up every 4 hours or so. He's been getting pretty bad diaper rash so I can't let him sit in a dirty diaper anyways. I know it's a pain to wake up from a dead sleep to do that in the middle of the night but we've found it's given us such a good routine and nights have been sooo much easier since we started doing the scheduled wake-ups.
  • My LO sleeps from 11-4, 4:30-8 now. I would definitely let him sleep!! Unless it's a really dirty diaper, I wouldn't change him. He is almost always sitting in a wet diaper because he pees as soon as we change it! We'd be going through 50 diapers a day! But he only goes #2 when he is feeding. So I change him after his 4 am feed.

They always say "don't wake a sleeping baby!" And although that would not be true for a 1-2 week old, it's definitely true for a 9 week old! They are sleeping for a reason!!
  • I let my LO sleep. If he is hungry or is bothered by his diaper he will let me know. I don't find it necessary to wake him for that.
  • Let him sleep! Mine also sleeps up to 9 heavenly hours and no way I'm waking him up, lol. As long as weight is good and no other issues, its great that they star STTN. Don't interrupt that.
  • My lo ' s pediatrician had me waking her every two hours during the day and every three at night until she was up to 7 lbs, which was at 6 weeks. After that she said feed her every few hours during the day and let her sleep at night. As long as she is getting adequate calories during the day, she will sleep longer at night. Also, I don't change her in the middle of the night anymore because she doesn't poop and she's not sensitive. Changing her wakes her up too much. I'd let your baby sleep.
  • This is my dream thread
  • Yeah my LO sleeps from 10 to 4 or 5 and then goes back to sleep so there is no way I'm waking him up.

We let our little man sleep. I was extremely worried at first but our pediatrician reassured me that he would have no problem letting us know when he's hungry and at his 2 month check up a couple of weeks ago he's between the 50th & 6th percentile  for everything and doing great.
  • Our DS sleeps a 5-6 hr stretch followed by another 3-4 hr stretch.  Almost always about 9 hrs with one feeding in the middle somewhere. He's up to 14 lbs at 2 months old (93rd percentile!) so I'm not worried about him gaining weight.  The ped is very happy with his weight gain and sleeping habits.   Our night routine consists of a diaper change and greasing his bum really well to protect from diaper rash.  Then I had the him on one side in our bed.  Then I Swaddle him in an aiden and anias blanket (he's just in a diaper) followed by a halo Swaddle since he's been breaking out of just one Swaddle.  Then I nurse him on the other side and lay him down in his pack n play while he's still drowsy.  Takes him about 5 minutes to fall asleep on his own.  When he gets up to eat in the middle of the night I don't unswaddle or change his diaper if he hasn't popped to keep from waking him up more.
  • I have no place on this thread  :( im in desperate need of a full night sleep
  • No waking a sleeping baby, especially at night!!! (Obviously as long as they are healthy and gaining weight) DD wasn't sleeping so well and super grunty but I figured out that she doesn't digest my milk well after I eat cheese. So now that I've eliminated that she sleeps a 5-6 hour stretch and then a 3 hour stretch. It was frustrating because before she would cry and then I'd start feeding her, she would pass gas or poop and then pass back out so it was clear that she wasn't waking up from hunger!
