CVS TESTING

hi everyone! This is my first pregnancy, I'm 26 years old & im quite unsure of CVS testing because of the risk of a miscarriage. The mothers my age that I spoke with, opted out of the testing. But mothers older than me say I should get it. I'm just really nervous, although I'm only 6 weeks, I know my 12 week mark will be here before I know it! What are your thoughts?

Re: CVS TESTING

  • From my understanding, a cvs test is only recommended when a genetic screening test comes back abnormal. I've had 2 pregnancies so far and it's never been brought up by my doctor. (Someone please correct me if I am wrong.)

Do what feels right for you. We do not do any genetic testing because it is not covered by our insurance and we have no risk factors. Others choose to do differently and I say its a completely individual decision. There is no wrong answer.

  • This makes me feel a lot better. Thank you!
  • When it comes to any optional testing, I was given the following advice for my first:  think about what you would do with the information.  If there is no chance you would terminate based on the information, then it isn't worth the risk.  If on the other hand you may take actions based on the information you receive, then it may be worth the risk to you.
  • We opted out with our first and will again with this one. I do not need the extra stress of knowing something is wrong with my baby. The risk of miscarriage is also not worth it. I don't want to do anything that could risk the life of my child.
I have met lots of people who have done it, and the peace of mind it's given them or the ability to prepare for what's to come has helped them. It's all about what you prefer. Do what you feel is best!

@mstanfi At your age, I'm wondering why you're considering CVS? It's generally not suggested under the age of 35 unless you have a high risk of genetic or chromosomal abnormalities.

For myself, I am 39, and I know that CVS will be suggested to me because of my age and the risk Down Syndrome. The risk of miscarriage (for me) outweighs the benefits of this test. We have worked too hard to make this baby just to lose it testing for something we would not terminate for anyway. The new free-cell DNA tests are just as accurate and are not invasive. We will do those first and then decide if the CVS really needs to be done.

In some cases termination is the lesser of two evils. If a genetic revelation of trisomy or another condition that is incompatible with life is made? Some like to have ALL the information. It makes me sad that there are those that go with the "no matter what we keep this baby" mentality because in some cases there is a difference between living & existing.

  • Also, some like to know what they are facing so they can contact the appropriate medical teams to be available at birth. I've known at least 2 that have terminated for conditions that would cause their baby untold pain in the minutes or hours they struggled outside the womb. Some don't want the baby they love to suffer and that is laudable IMHO.

There but for the Grace of many deities go we. You never truly know & that's my point. So many of the Loss Moms I know had the exact same "I would never terminate anyway.." Mindset until they were forced into the situation. It's common here on the BMB when discussions about testing come up.

I've never had to make that call & fear ever having to do it. Just that sometimes the "but I would NEVER!" Language can be extremely hurtful to anyone who has had to do it as a mercy to their baby. Just some perspective as you think about this topic.
